Re: Dating Paul's letters

To believe that Paul is actually pre-70 AD you have to presume the following 1) the letters are basically a unity -- allowing some wiggle room for inauthentic elements or deutero Pauline material or books (varies from person to person) 2a) the bulk of the pseudo autobiographical material is authenti...

Re: Marcion and Thomas in all of Luke

You have gone a bridge too far, much like Stephen Huller (Secret Alias) in creating a false dichotomy with reading Tertullian. It's not a case of always faithful or never faithful. Many things are at play, especially in a long work where a writer is trying to keep their train of thought over perhaps...

Re: Marcion reconstruction is very dubious

The reconstruction appears to be very, very faithful // that is Tertullian's reconstruction -sgw ... 22 saying, “ The Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and scribes, and be killed [or: crucified ], and the th i r d day [Marcion: after thr ee day s ] be...

Re: The "Assembly of God"

I do not mean that assembly of God is the same as the Gospel of God. Rather that these two concepts are missing in Marcion's Paul, and that each has the purpose of replacing forms that Emphasized Christ above God. The purpose in both cases is to elevate God, that is the Jewish God/Creator God/Law Gi...

Re: The "Assembly of God"

Romans 16 is not in the Marcionite. It's a letter from Tertius to Phoebe. Somehow that got tacked onto Romans. Of note "Greetings" or "Salute" or Salutations" is one of the words missing from the attested Marcionite Pauline letters, and only appears in the gospel pejorativel...

Re: The "Assembly of God"

I mean "Church of God" accompanies the "Gospel of God" and the Davidic formula or Jesus being chosen as Christ, and the idea that the father rose Jesus from the dead, as opposed to the Johannine formula where he is preexisting or the Marcionite (and Apellean, although they gave h...

Re: The "Assembly of God"

I think the church of God is a later development. There is no attestation in the Marcionite corpus. There is one reference to a church of the saints (1 Corinthians 14:33), and one to the churches of the gentiles (Romans 16:4 -- a late addition to the letter) where it suggests a separate entity than ...

Re: John 18: 19 - 23: "What Did the High Priest Say?"

Charles, I would suggest a different interpretation of names. Think in terms of politics. Theology is always secondary to politics; that is who has the authority to appoint bishops and control the revenue streams of shrines and holy places. Names are invoked to establish relationships and chains of ...

Re: The Marcionite gospel with accompanying sources.

Ben, A few criticisms. 1) Many of the transposition of words are Latinisms, where Tertullian has translated the phrase into Latin. We see some examples in Greek-Latin diglots, where the same transposition has occurred when the Latin leaks into the Greek. These transpositions likely do not reflect th...
