Re: Is the name ''Pillars'' a late interpolation in Galatian

This article by Ernst Barnikol might be useful to see how one scholar evaluated it. https://depts.drew.edu/jhc/barnikol.html Herman Detering gives the best analysis of the Marcionite text, and judges the names were present. only "and Barnabas" (who is missing entirely from the Marcionite l...

Re: The Marcionite Gospel Beginning Did Not Mention '15th ye

Trolling again Mr. Huller? Epiphanius Panarion 42.11.5 And at the beginning of the Gospel he (Marcion) says that, "In the fifteenth year of Tiberius Caesar" καὶ ἀρχὴν τοῦ εὐαγγελίου ἔταξε ταύτην << ἐν τῷ πεντεκαιδεκάτῳ ἔτει Τιβερίου Καίσαρος >> Tertullian Adversus Marcionem 4.7.1 "In ...

Re: Jesus and Joshua.

I think the distinction is artificial. Something in our English language. We distinguish the common name Joshua from Jesus. We would never name our sons Jesus. But in Spanish there is no such distinction, much as in Greek. It's not uncommon to see a Spanish speaker named Jesus. I think this impacts ...

Re: Jesus and Joshua.

This may also help explain 1 Corinthians 10:1-4, about Jesus/Joshua (same in Greek) being the spiritual rock that followed Moses in the desert. I think all of this is consistent with an allegorical concept of Moses replaced by Jesus, the Law (Moses) replaced by grace (Christ), as we see suggested in...

Re: A Solution for Reconciling 'Ignatius' with 'Peregrinus'

Given that Ignatius story is after the great persecution, sure it could have drawn from sources like Peregrinus and Paul, 4th and 5th century literature was big on emphasizing such things. But its a serious stretch to say it represents something even remotely reliable from two centuries or three cen...

Re: Was Revelation before the first Gospel?

Ged, My basic point is it's idealized with all months of 30 days. It's not a practical calendar and not one in use by either the Romans or the Jews at that time. But employed in Revelation. I am pretty sure the author was not introducing a new calendar to the world. And no specific date is there. Th...

Re: Was Revelation before the first Gospel?

Just a comment on 42 months versus 1260 days. These are in fact the same time frame. The writer is speaking in terms of the ideal Mesopotamian calendar of twelve 30-day months. This tells us the writing is symbolic, as we'd expect in this dreamscape like book. An example of the use of such a calenda...

Re: Why did no New Testament books mention AD70?

Who were the new Tenants? Jerusalem lay vacant for 60+ years. That is the hole in that theory. And it's a big one.

Re: Why did no New Testament books mention AD70?

I find it difficult to understand how they could have written their accounts without reference to, or at least blithely toward these events. The rending of the temple curtain is a symbol of the disinheritance of the Jews, the overthrow of the priestly religion, the opening up of the cultus to all, ...

Re: Did Bar Kochba torture and murder Christians?

You are correct to doubt the reports, and the veracity of Justin. Archeological evidence locates the Bar Kokhba revolt to the region of the Judean Hills south of Aelia Capitolina (Jerusalem). Work by Boaz Zissu and Amos Kloner in identifying all the actual tunnels, along with Numismatics of coins fo...
