Re: "the brothers who were in Pontus": Marcion's? John's? Bo

Also I think it highly likely that Papias was a member of the kata-Phrygians, the Montanists. Notice the details about a 'city appearing' which is related to the coming of the end times and the beginning of a second world. Assuming you are correct on this point - based it appears on internal eviden...

Re: "the brothers who were in Pontus": Marcion's? John's? Bo

It is difficult to know what to make of the passage but Stuart's myopia regarding Marion is clear. His slavish devotion to his preferred sources - Tertullian and Epiphanius -speaks volumes here. At least Papias might have had some direct evidence about Marcion and/or Marcionites. His preferred sour...

Re: "the brothers who were in Pontus": Marcion's? John's? Bo

I am not convinced anything about the temporal placement of Papias is accurate. Eusubius is not reliable. You have to almost completely discount it without corroborating evidence. He seems to fit into the whole 4th century fictional history meant to bridge the gap between the confirm-able Christian ...

Re: An Explanation for the Origin of 'Luke'

Kittel notes "In later later literature λύκος is often used for the false teacher or the one who corrupts the community (Mt. 7:15 is often quoted): Did. 16, 3; Ign. Ρhil. 2, 2; 2 Cl. 5:2 - 4, Just. Apol. 1.16, Dial. 35.3, 81.2). The anti-Marcionite concept of a 'gospel of the wol...

Re: The Results of Previous Studies of Marcion Are Worthless

Stephen, I thought about responding to a few of the errors (rather egregious ones too) in your analysis on the very first page, but I think it's a waste of my time to engage you in this forum and format. I would suggest you write an abstract, and then a one page thesis. Until you can organize your t...

Re: On the Marcionite hate against the Jewish God

I understand that you are mentally retarded and empathize/sympathize with how difficult this must be. But don't you see a qualitative difference in the anti-Jewish hostility between the pagan writers and what you have managed to uncover with respect to Marcion? For God's sake, you just have some mo...

Re: Scholars who date Luke-Acts to early 2nd C

Actually, the Marcion position is misrepresented here. Oversimplified by critics of the position of Marcionite priority. The views of Price, Detering, and the late Doughty I know from first hand conversations and from their writings are much more complex with regard to Marcion. Price flatly states t...

Re: Scholars who date Luke-Acts to early 2nd C

I just want to compile a list of reputable scholars to prove to a fundamentalist friend, who of course dates it to the 60sCE, that a 2nd C dating is not some rogue view only held by disgruntled conspiracy theorists. Why is your friend relatively okay with a date in the 70s/80s/90s but not after the...

Re: Luke & Marcion [Lk 22:42,44]

These verses (Lk 22:42,44) are (certainly?) not in Marcion but are referenced by Justin (Dial 103.8) as being in the memoirs. If the Dialogue is circa 160 I'm not sure this helps much in terms of determining priority between Marcion and Luke, but it at least shows Justin is familiar with Lucan non-...
