Re: Was Jesus an Essene?
I am still at a loss to see why the group has to be named 'the doers of the law' based on the evidence you've cited. Why couldn't they be Sadducees or 'those of Ishu'? How is there any 'exactness' about the name of the group from this evidence?

Re: Marcion Justin and Tertullian
Either Tertullian wrote the Five Books himself end to end or he reused older material. The fact that the text accuses Marcion of deleting things now only found in Matthew does not mean (a) that the material derived from Matthew or (b) that the original author who said 'Marcion deleted X' understood ...

Re: Was Jesus an Essene?
I think we can say with confidence that the passages I cited that concern "the Liar" demonstrate clearly that the DSS sect (aka 'doers of the law') were opposed by someone associated with them who said "don't do the law." This is the sense I get ... Do you recognize the contradi...

Re: Marcion Justin and Tertullian
Or it could be a corrupted (twice over) Diatessaron based commentary like Ephrem's originally.

Re: Marcion Justin and Tertullian
comparing Marcion's Gospel against his own, which could be either Matthew or, as several has said is more likely, a harmony of Matthew, Mark, and/or Luke (canonical version with infancy stuff - maybe John too, tough question). why does all of this follow? Why does it have to be about 'Matthew,' 'Ma...

Re: Was Jesus an Essene?
But this is exactly what happened to the 'doers of the law' sect in the DSS Really? I've read the Qumran material. I don't see how we can use the word 'exactly' (i.e. that everything is crystal clear) when: 1. we don't know when the texts were written (i.e. to what age/historical circumstance they ...

Re: Was Jesus an Essene?
Why do you have such a dislike for considering other possibilities other than those you have a vested interested in. The fact that most people have developed a 'connect the dots' between inherited assumptions regarding: 1. John the Baptist as an Essene 2. Jesus as an Essene by way of John and then b...

Re: Marcion Justin and Tertullian
And critical for our understanding of how Tertullian's Five Books developed are the first words which signal to the reader (many of whom might have had the original material as written by someone else in a slightly different form - i.e. not Tertullian): Whatever in times past2 we have wrought in opp...
