Re: Mythicist Representations of Jesus in Ancient & Medieval

I think there are probably (at least) two separate ideas about the burnng bush. Idea 1: Christ literally met with Moses at the burning bush. Idea 2: The burning bush is a type or symbol of Mary bearing Christ in her womb. Andrew Criddle When Jesus mentioned the burning bush, how come neither of the...

Re: The Tale Wagging The Dogma. Which "Mark" Wrote GMark?

To show the myth of Jesus, we must show the numerous other myths that support the myth of Jesus as being myth not history. No, if you want to show that Jesus is a mythical figure, you have to have evidence. Pretending that other histories are myths not only fails in itself but doesn't touch on the ...

Re: Atwill vs Carotta

Ghost- There is a subtlety involved that is sometimes missed in a quick summary. If I state that "Jesus was Titus", I might be asserting that "The Stories written about Titus in the Jewish War were rewritten into Stories that Symbolically - Typologically - were written about "Je...

Understood. Even so, if they were in the Temple, they would have been in the Court of Gentiles, which was supposed to be a place of worship, right? Jesus would have been justified in his actions if that was the case. And isn't that why he wasn't arrested? 3,000,000 Jewish pilgrims in the city looki...

Re: Justin and Tertullian refer to the census archives

That's probably an overstatement. But the thrust of the data points to that period. I wonder what Eusebius has in his chronicle for this...? If this is what you think, I wonder if you've ever really looked into it? Example: "It has taken these 46 years to build this temple and YOU can do it in...

Re: Atheist assumptions dating Gospels are wrong

Common misconception but in fact, according to the Talmud, the money changers were essentially unpaid volunteers compensated only for coinage lost to breakage. The Mishna Shekalim 1:3 documents exactly how every shekel was sent, how skimming was prevented (lots of witnesses for all handling and tra...

Re: Justin and Tertullian refer to the census archives

I think they just go with the idea that he was crucified under Pilate and was probably over 30 (the age at which he would be credited with any cultural authority as a teacher). Pilate was Prefect from 26-36 CE, so subtracting ~30 years gives a range of ~5 BCE-6 CE. They seem to prefer a birth date ...

Re: Justin and Tertullian refer to the census archives

Why do such scholars use these 'clearly fictive' accounts of the birth of Jesus to try to date when Jesus was born? If I write a fictional account of Obama being born in Kenya, I would be amazed if a reputable scholar denounced it as fiction - and then used it as his source to get information about...

PhilosopherJay wrote:
Probably more curious is the Gospel of John NOT mentioning the Temple's destruction. Most everyone agrees John was written a decade or more after the fall of Jerusalem.
There's no reason for John to mention it if the temple was still standing when he wrote his gospel.

Re: Atheist assumptions dating Gospels are wrong

It is my understanding that the moneylenders et al. in the Temple were making profit off of the sacrificial animals they were selling. Jesus was opposed to the practice in the same way that Luther was opposed to the practice of selling indulgences. Is there reason to believe otherwise? They were no...
