Re: Gary Goldberg, 'The Coincidences of the Emmaus Narrative of Luke and the Testimonium of Josephus'
Ken, you made this comment in the thread linked to above: Your interpretation that Josephus meant to place the events narrated between the death of Germanicus (which was in 19 CE) and the expulsion of the Jews from Rome (also in 19 CE) is a not impossible interpretation, which is not the same thing...

Re: Gary Goldberg, 'The Coincidences of the Emmaus Narrative of Luke and the Testimonium of Josephus'
That Eusebius would then place his forged TF in a context of 19 c.e. is beyond comprehensible - it would undercut his very argument regarding dating the Acts of Pilate. It would simply be madness. The 19 c.e. context of the Josephan TF was thus able to be overlooked, ignored, sidelined. Eusebius wo...

Re: "Teacher of Righteousness" and "Wicked Priest" identities
Stephen, I don't have 'Qumran-Related History: Contemporaries Jannaeus, Absalom, and Judah the Essene' from the 2023 Jodi Magness Festschrift, but I seem to have a draft of yours in PDF from 2005 called 'Jannaeus, His Brother Absalom, and Judah the Essene'. Are they basically the same thing? Best, Ken

Re: "Teacher of Righteousness" and "Wicked Priest" identities
The Teacher of Righteousness and the Wicked Priest, each, must be earlier than the earliest available mentions of them. That would seem seem to be uncontroversial as a principle of historical analysis (one could dispute it by positing divine revelation, precognition, or time travel of course). How ...

Re: "Teacher of Righteousness" and "Wicked Priest" identities
So spin goes no further than 65/64 BCE for the DSS, as far as personages go (but which is at least Roman-era) and also demolished my certainty that the "eagle" imagery and reference to the Kittim sacrificing to their standards in the Habakkuk Pesher refer to the Romans. Thanks. My argumen...

Re: Gary Goldberg, 'The Coincidences of the Emmaus Narrative of Luke and the Testimonium of Josephus'
What moves the balance towards the need of the hypothesis of a Luke 2.0 (= Eusebius) when the original Luke 1.0 (=the author of Luke/Acts) would have worked perfectly as the (first) interpolator of the TF? Here is the Greek text of the Testimonium Flavianum with particular words or word groupings t...

Re: "Teacher of Righteousness" and "Wicked Priest" identities
In this thread I propose that the Qumran-view Teacher was Judah the Essene and that the Wicked Priest was Alexander Jannaeus. Before proceeding, are there any currently-claimed reasons why these two can not be so identified? There's a great deal of interpretation involved, so my conclusions are nec...

Re: Gary Goldberg, 'The Coincidences of the Emmaus Narrative of Luke and the Testimonium of Josephus'
The theory that the author of the Testimonium knew all of the summary reports of Jesus in Luke-Acts and not just the source of the Emmaus narrative in Luke 24 explains the date better. Also, as I suggested in the 'Eusebian Reading' paper, I think the final sentence of the Testimonium, about the sur...
