Religious Satire
An interesting article entitled: Are Religion and Satire Mutual Taboos - A Comment on the Life of Brian www.koed.hu/mozaik14/peter.pdf The author writes that " writing or performing a satire is one of the most difficult and serious actions an intellectual may do ." He also writes that &quo...

Re: Acts of the Pagan Martyrs - an Anti-Roman genre
I've heard of them, but never read any. Why does the author conclude that they didn't influence Christian Acts? Basically the author finds little evidence for any direct dependence. They share similar themes (dissidents persecuted by the state) and to a certain extent similar rhetorical conventions...

Re: On dating the Gnostic literature after 325 CE
Step (2) - Categorizing the literary evidence supporting the Mainstream chronology A process of categorization is employed to focus on the key literary evidence supporting the generally accepted mainstream theory of "Pre-Nicaean" authorship. The texts have been classified according to six...

Proba's cento
Some notes on this amazing work from a 4th century woman Faltonia Betitia Proba. Does anyone have a better English translation of the opening lines than that below? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cento_(poetry) A cento is a poetical work wholly composed of verses or passages taken from other authors;...

Re: Which stories most influence the Jesus story?
On this forum many stories have been mentioned that could have influenced the Jesus story. One must first start with an hypothesis concerning the century in which the Jesus story was assembled in its final form. Any stories after this century would not be able to be perceived to contribute accordin...

Re: Historia Augusta: Constantinian scriptorium?
Another question which arises in my mind at the moment is what is there to prevent Ammianus from reading the HA and incorporating these perceived correspondences (by Syme and others) into his own work, the Res Gestae c.391 CE? The fact that Ammianus is basically a good historian and the HA basicall...

Do you know of a high-res, contemporary photo of that "Isu Chrestos" (Marcionite) inscription? Cant find an image yet. WIKI states the inscription is catalogued as follows: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deir_Ali Philippe Le Bas and William Henry Waddington, Greek Inscriptions grecques et ...

Re: On dating the Gnostic literature after 325 CE
All the evidence points to many gnostic writings predating New Testament Gospel writings. Hi Philosopher Jay, Could you point to a few gnostic writings which predate the NT and cite the evidence used for this. AKAIK the mainstream hypothesis is that the NT writings appeared first [chronologically -...
