Re: Alexamenos graffiti
Hi the Crow, The question is not why they do not look alike. The question is where could the artist have gotten the idea to show a God with outstretched hands, if he did not wish to indicate a crucifixion. Let's see...here's a coin from the time of the emperor Domitian (81-96 CE). According to Sueto...

Re: Alexamenos graffiti
Hi perseusomega, In response to the original question, as there is not good evidence that the image represents anything to do with Christianity, there is no good evidence that it represents any sect of Christianity. Here is a wider image of the graffiti that shows numerous vertical, slanted and hori...

Re: Alexamenos graffiti
Hi peseusomega9, In teaching "Humanities" courses for the past 15 years, I have come across dozens of cases where experts have mislabeled or misunderstood images for centuries. I will take this as another case, since you cannot provide any evidence to the contrary. Thanks. Warmly, Jay Rask...

Re: Alexamenos graffiti
Hi perseusomega, There is nothing wrong with the drawing. The images of the god with the Donkey's head and Alexamenos are quite clear and well done. It is the crucifixion instrument that is not clear. There are a series of random horizontal and vertical lines that we can imagine as a crucifixion ins...

Re: Alexamenos graffiti
Hi perseusomega9, I think this is a good example of the Christian imagination at work. When one studies a good picture of this image, one sees that there is no crucifixion being represented here. The series of broken lines don't really make sense as a cross. http://jayraskin.files.wordpress.com/2014...

Re: Luke and Annas the high priest
Hi Bernard, Interesting analysis and proposition. This is a very good explanation of why the writer of Acts got the name of the high priest wrong at the time of Paul's trial. If the author of Acts was relying on Josephus to know who was High Priest between 52-60, wouldn't this be an indication that ...

Re: Two new articles by our pal Tim O'Neill
Hi Bertie, Anybody who thinks about what is written and understands that Josephus is not writing for a Christian audience understands that the passage is a forgery. 1. The use of the term "Christ" (the anointed one) would be meaningless to the readers of Josephus' text. Josephus does not u...

Re: Another Explanation Involving Deliberate Changes
Hi maryhelena, I think there is enough history here that we don't have to imagine that Josephus is being allegorical. The conflict between royal priestly families could have mirrored earlier royal family conflicts. The change of opinion about Ananus Ananus between 72 (Wars) and 92 (Antiquities) is n...

Another Explanation Involving Deliberate Changes
Hi DCH, I really like the idea that James the Just is another Christian mythological figure based on Ananus. One of the reasons he probably because known as Ananus the Just is that he brought the terrorist zealot Jesus of Galilee to justice. I also think the hypothesis that accidental marginal notes...
