Re: Hypothesis: Wicked Priest = Herod Agrippa I, Teacher of Righteousness = Simeon of Jerusalem, Man of the Lie = Paul
That's true, agreed, John2, you have not claimed that all Qumran scrolls are from the first century CE. But, in view of this thread, is it correct to say that you, John2, do claim that all Qumran texts that mention the Teacher of Righteousness and/or the Wicked Priest are all from the first century ...

Re: Josephus and Holy Men
Further, I wrote: "...later, a writer or writers changed his text--not necessarily merely by additions (or subtractions) but also by rewriting, rephrasing it." That is different than your mischaracterization: "....scholars who arbitrarily extract the things that they don't like from t...

Re: Did Josephus mention Jesus?
More relevant than that quote (and the "The James Gang" comment title) is Contra Celsum I:47 (H. Chadwick tr.): "...Josephus in the eighteenth book of the Jewish antiquities bears witness that John was a baptist and promised purification to people who were baptized. [Footnote 1. Antiq...

Do you think your comment, while not addressing the case, was "substantive"?

Re: Luke-Acts: A Historian Synopsis
Thanks. John Lightfoot did not think them--the Josephus one and the Hagigah one-- identical, but maybe a relative [Manaen son of Manaen] was involved in a mix-up. And earlier Jewish commentary is cited. Others do/did think them identical.

Re: Luke-Acts: A Historian Synopsis
If I recall correctly, the elder Dr. Lightfoot (John Lightfoot) expressed doubt that Josephus' Menahem (or Menachem or Manahem or Manaem) the Essene was the same as Menahem in mishnah Hagigah--though that might (?) suggest that he responded to an earlier claim that they were identical. So it seems m...

Re: Luke-Acts: A Historian Synopsis
Lightfoot-wise, one can distinguish, both of them a Dr. Lightfoot" John Lightfoot 1602-1673, author of Horae Hebraicae et Talmudicae : Hebrew and Talmudical exercitations upon the Gospels, the Acts, some chapters of St. Paul's Epistle to the Romans, and the First Epistle to the Corinthians and ...

Did Josephus mention Jesus?
This question has often been discussed, but not yet in the Academic Discussion venue, with different guidelines than the general forum. And discussion will continue elsewhere. For example, in the translation and commentary including Antiquities 18 by Daniel R. Schwartz, announced by Brill for tomorr...

Re: Is Menahem of Antiquities 15.371.9 (10.5) identical with Menahem in m. Hagigah 2.2?
Menahem in Antiquities 15, 371-9 is readily available. For convenience, here is the passage translated from Mishna Hagigah (or Chagigah) 2.2, as given, along with the Hebrew text, in sefaria.org: "Yosei ben Yo’ezer says not to place one’s hands on offerings before slaughtering them on a Festiva...
