Re: Josephus and Holy Men
John Baptist is also mentioned by Josephus Ant.18.118 for attracting people to him; Jesus, reportedly, attracted people to him. Josephus wrote that Judah the Essene attracted to him students. Why no mention of the above-noted "holy" man? "Josephus mentions Simon the Essene in War 2.11...

Re: W. E Barnes, The Testimony of Josephus to Jesus Christ (1920)
Peter Kirby, you addressed Andrew, who can speak for himself, but also, indirectly, others of those who do not agree with you on this, including me. I wrote that it is probable, not just possible, that Josephus mentioned Jesus. The several reasons I have given were, by one or another, either mocked ...

Re: Origen - On John Book 20?
As you may know, this Commentary has not survived entirely. Books 1-10 have a few comments on John 20. The later fragments have rather more comments on John 20. In English, presumably the best source is Commentary on the Gospel according to John. books 13-32 Statement Of Responsibility A: translated...

Peter Kirby, above, in part: "....So the interpolation of the TF into Josephus is practically required to preserve our sanity....A vote for a TF interpolation is a vote for the possibility of our knowledge of antiquity." If I may suggest, imo: a) Voting may not be an appropriate way to det...

But, in context, the Cairo genizah Damascus Document addressed people alive much later than the time of Moses, say 100 bce, give or take (with Qumran fragmentary copies of various dates). It mentions Moses and Nebuchadnezzar and several prophets and David and Zadok and an exile to the land of Damasc...

Re: Expectancy
JS above, in part: "This book [Antiquities] contained a bible understandable to the people...." But most people could not read. And few who did read could afford, in money and time, such a long book. Nor to focus on whatever little--not the full-blown later TF!--there was about Jesus. (If ...

Re: How does John the Baptist and baptism fit into the Christian theology of salvation?
Non-response to the issues raised, again. Semi-interesting use of "untinged" but not helpful history-wise. PS And where is your unearned high-horse dismissal of (the above) "I don't recall any Josephus scholar focusing on anaphora vis-a-vis Jesus or not in Ant. 18, which is a bit odd ...

Josephus additionally mentions Judah the Essene also in Antiquities 13.311-313. Josephus mentions Simon the Essene in War 2.111-113 and Antiquities 17.346-348. (Compare Luke 2:25-35?) And Essenes as a group in both War and Antiquities. Bibliography on Essenes in Adam and Burchard (1972) and in Verme...

Responding to JarekS » Fri Nov 15, 2024 7:33 am Yes, thanks, now I better understand your opinion. Specifically, I think some Paul letters before Antiquities were not alone--but also, for instance, Mark. (And likely-lost texts.) Plus, um, people. And though Josephus may be described as a "make ...
