Re: Of Nazirites & Naṣoraeans.

These are some of Jones' arguments: A. H. M. Jones, The Cities of the Eastern Roman Provinces , pages 262-264: 262 Our knowledge of northern Syria at the beginning of the reign of Augustus is derived from the official lists of the time. These have been partly preserved, in a very mangled form, in Pl...

Re: Of Nazirites & Naṣoraeans.

Think of it this way. Musianus seems to be quoted for specific facts about geographical and natural entities which Pliny is discussing; never mind whether those facts are miraculous or not; they are details about places (such as their size or distance from other places). Agrippa, on the other hand, ...

Re: Of Nazirites & Naṣoraeans.

Your sources seem unanimous that Pliny used Mucianus mainly for his statements about strange, fantastical, and unusual phenomena (such as springs which always taste of wine). How would this tendency apply to the name of a tetrarchy in Syria? The Short Answer is: Most sources that I cited do not say...

Re: Some Observations on the Nomina Sacra of the First Three Centuries

Ben, you have way more experience presenting disputed passages in a document than I have. Are there any examples of yours that I can emulate? I would probably just use footnotes/endnotes: Galatians 2.15-16 : 15 “We are Jews by nature and not sinners ἐξ ἐθνῶν 1 ; 16 nevertheless, knowing that a pers...

Re: Justin Martyr, the Gospel of Luke, and Marcion.

This is a good question, Ben. If I understand what you're after, you also mean what passages does Justin quote or allude to peculiarly Lukan material that he could not have gotten from Mark or Matthew. So, for instance, the preaching of John the Baptist from Matt. 3.11-12; Luke 3.16-17 in Trypho 49...

Justin Martyr, the Gospel of Luke, and Marcion.

Besides the infancy narrative in Luke 1-2, which is reflected quite often in Justin Martyr, what passages does Justin quote or allude to which would reflect what we know as (chapters 3-24 of) canonical Luke over and against the Marcionite Gospel? For example, were Justin to say something about the ...

Re: Some Observations on the Nomina Sacra of the First Three Centuries

Look at the variation in these supralinears: P46, 2 Corinthians 1.1-8.png Some undershoot the abbreviation considerably; others overshoot. One of them completely misses the Χ in ΧΡΥ. ETA: Right before that last one, the stroke misses the Ι of ΙΗΥ, too. I can easily see that I have just found my new...
