Re: Some Observations on the Nomina Sacra of the First Three Centuries

Look at the variation in these supralinears:

Some undershoot the abbreviation considerably; others overshoot. One of them completely misses the Χ in ΧΡΥ. ETA: Right before that last one, the stroke misses the Ι of ΙΗΥ, too.

Re: Some Observations on the Nomina Sacra of the First Three Centuries

Thanks man. That's nu to me. :D   :notworthy: Sorry. Couldn't resist. How hard did you try? ^ Any idea why that is done? No, not really. And yet just a few lines down we find another word that has the very same ending with no overstroke for nu. Yep! Inconsistency in a manuscript is t...

Re: Some Observations on the Nomina Sacra of the First Three Centuries

Oh, and Lane, since you are now getting knee deep into this stuff, I wanted to point something out that is bound to confuse you if you do not expect it. There is also a tendency for the scribes to replace a final nu in a word with a horizontal stroke. This is not the same thing as a nomen sacrum ; i...

Jax wrote: Fri Apr 09, 2021 1:44 pmYou can see that the scribe has extended the overstroke past the NS just like it would be done if the word was at the end of a sentence.
It happens again at the end of a line a few pages later. Also kind of happens in the middle of a line on the same page:

Ran across an old bookmark of mine in my browser today: https://www.kalvesmaki.com/LXX/NTChart.htm. Seems handy for quick browsing.

Re: Was the Vatican Originally Associated with Evil and Magic

Can any one explain why Βασικανὸν is taken to mean "Vatican" other than scholars unconsciously "connecting the dots" between our inherited truths and what they read and can't otherwise expain. Probably because (A) codex Mosquensis 50 has Βατικανόν instead of Βασικανόν and (B) Ru...

Re: Some Observations on the Nomina Sacra of the First Three Centuries

If there is anything that I love about this study, it's the convoluted reasoning that goes on. Hurtado feels that IH must be the original rendering of the NS as Greek gementera I + H = 18 which is the numerical value of the word life in Hebrew. Never mind that, at last count, there were 8 different...

Re: Some Observations on the Nomina Sacra of the First Three Centuries

So if I type in 'is' for instance will it show all of the instances of the NS is? Not quite that simple yet, so far as I can determine. I can certainly find all instances of nomina sacra easily enough, but cannot specify which ones to look for, at least not yet. Still trying to figure the search fu...

You can see what kind of information you are getting in this screenshot of Matthew 1.1: CNTTS Matthew 1.1.png Each of the double angle brackets (>>) after the list of manuscripts attesting a variant unfolds into a table with the manuscripts on that list tabulated by century and Aland category (I-V);...

Re: Some Observations on the Nomina Sacra of the First Three Centuries

How useful do you think this tool would be for researching NS in unical? It will not distinguish majuscule from minuscule manuscripts for you, so far as I can tell. If you had a separate list of uncial/majuscule manuscripts, so that you knew which ones to look for, then this apparatus could be of t...
