Re: Some Observations on the Nomina Sacra of the First Three Centuries
I'm sure you'll do a thorough job, but pater is another that doesn't necessarily have an immediate proto-orthodox connotation, but one that can easily be subsumed. Yes, exactly. I can easily see, say, the Marcionites being totally okay with Father being treated as a special noun. I can see in retro...

Re: Some Observations on the Nomina Sacra of the First Three Centuries
I like this. I also like Trobisch's point of this being a very specific editorial decision, at least with the Big Four, and I think that goes beyond anti-imperial psyops and so were also in the world of counter-arguments to unorthodox positions (including names). Thanks. And I completely agree that...

Re: 1 Thess 2:14-15 : "the Jews who killed the Lord Jesus"
I find Schmidt's case for interpolation pretty convincing, but he doesn't deal with the evidence from Tertullian. Interpolations that are unattested in Marcion are pretty easy to accept. But the proposition of an interpolation that existed in Marcion's version as well is more difficult, especially ...

Re: 1 Thess 2:14-15 : "the Jews who killed the Lord Jesus"
BeDuhn says that Marcion omitted Jesus following the Lord, but the version I read has Jesus there. What's going on? BeDuhn is claiming that Tertullian reads: "Who both killed the Lord and their own prophets", but the text has "Who both killed the Lord Jesus and their own prophets&quo...

Re: 1 Thess 2:14-15 : "the Jews who killed the Lord Jesus"
You can read BeDuhn's take here: http://earlywritings.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1840&p=40619#p40613 . I have long suspected that 1 Thessalonians has been interpolated by someone of a Matthean mindset. I think that most of 5.1-11 is an interpolation, as well, and that passage has a Matthe...

Re: Some Observations on the Nomina Sacra of the First Three Centuries
Yeah, it occurs to me also that if one wanted to keep the name of the Christ secret from outsiders one just need simply omit it from the texts. Good point. The issue we face when trying to trace the origins of the nomina sacra is that none of the usual reasons for abbreviations appear to hold in ou...

Re: Some Observations on the Nomina Sacra of the First Three Centuries
Without background, would it have been back then? Yes. How? Something like IH could be 18 or anything that started with an I in Greek. Same with IC. Christos might be surmised from XR or XC if you knew that the cult was called Christian and Theos From ThU might be a no brainer but IHCOUC from IC or...

Re: Some Observations on the Nomina Sacra of the First Three Centuries
Another thought occurs to me as well. Say you have a mystery cult like the Christ cult and you want to keep hidden the meaning of cult secrets from the uninitiated. So you abbreviate the important words and make them look like random numbers. Only the people initiated know the meaning of the myster...
