Re: Some Observations on the Nomina Sacra of the First Three Centuries
It all makes me wonder, if one were trying to abbreviate a noun that did not end a sentence and you wanted to alert the reader that the sentence wasn't ending at that point, why not simply abbreviate it by suspension adding a case ending letter to make it work grammatically and draw a line over the...

Re: Some Observations on the Nomina Sacra of the First Three Centuries
Another thought occurs to me as well. Say you have a mystery cult like the Christ cult and you want to keep hidden the meaning of cult secrets from the uninitiated. So you abbreviate the important words and make them look like random numbers. Only the people initiated know the meaning of the myster...

Re: Some Observations on the Nomina Sacra of the First Three Centuries
I find myself wondering, hope this doesn't sound too retarded. As the last letter in something like XRN is there to denote (not sure denote is the best term just the best that I can come up with right now) how the name or title is used grammatically in a sentence is it fair to call it a contraction...

Re: Some Observations on the Nomina Sacra of the First Three Centuries
Sorry for any confusion. I am simply trying to distinguish between NS that are suspended or not. XN is a contraction while XRN would be a partial contraction because of the Rho after the Chi making it IMO both a contraction and a suspension at the same time. XR is in my opinion a suspension. Ah, I ...

Re: Some Observations on the Nomina Sacra of the First Three Centuries
Next up is YN, YC, YY, and YOm with the non contracted forms YIN, YIC, and YIY found only in p46 and a variant YE found in p45. Also the contracted form IN, IC, IY being on an equal footing with the non-contracted forms IHN, IHC, IHY with one variant form IHCY found in p37 and two variant forms IH ...

Re: Some Observations on the Nomina Sacra of the First Three Centuries
After this we have the contracted forms XN, XC, XY, and XOm used at about the same rate as the non contracted forms XRN, XRC, XRY, and XROm with only one instance of a XR used in p18. I am not sure how you are using the terms "contracted" and "noncontracted" in this sentence, as...

Re: Good resource for checking scriptural references?
What about the other direction? For example, are there any good resources that list out all of the references within a work, so for example, list out all of these references in 1 Corinthians, etc. Most study bibles have this, but its not listed out in terms of just the references, its a bunch of no...

Depends on which books you buy.
