Re: Good resource for checking scriptural references?
The McLean looks nice, but its like $150. I was hoping for something on-line :) When I search Bibleindex for Isaiah 42 I get no results. But obviously McLean lists results. I get lots of results on Biblindex for Isaiah 42. Make sure you have the entire chapter selected, and also "All" ava...

Re: dating the birth stories?
IIRC Suetonius still writes about a Chrestus in the rein of Claudius. Different person altogether? Yes, Suetonius has Chrestus. Could be a different figure altogether. Not sure, though. There is that weird matchup between Suetonius seemingly implying that Chrestus instigated trouble at Rome and Rev...

Re: Good resource for checking scriptural references?
Is there a resource that let's you search for references to passages within the scriptures? Like say I wanted to see all of the passages that reference Isaiah 42, or whatever? For the OT alone, I use Citations and Allusions to Jewish Scripture in Early Christian and Jewish Writings Through 180 CE ,...

Re: dating the birth stories?
If memory serves, Suetonius and Tacitus both use the term Chrestus. The significance of the term Chrestianos in Tacitus is probably medieval . Pliny has Christo quasi deo and Tacitus has auctor nominis eius Christus . ETA: Even today Christ is still Christ in French, whereas Christian is Chrétien.

Tertullian Apparel of Women what the same (God) has said through the apostle: Let your probity appear before men. probably paraphrases 2 Corinthians 8:21 For we are taking pains to do what is right, not only in the eyes of the Lord but also in the eyes of man. I am not sure about that: Tertullian, ...

Re: Of Nazirites & Naṣoraeans.
Ben, what makes people think that Pliny was using Marcus Agrippa (1st century BC) as his source? Jones' arguments. (This is in the section on Pliny.) In an essay, "The Location of Tarichaea," a city in Galilee destroyed in 66 AD, which Pliny described, Nikos Kokkinos writes that Pliny was...
