Re: A brief note about Hebrews 13.11-13
(I have not yet written my planned article on Hebrews yet, so I am not offering to fight over it right now. I am currently involved in an article showing that the passage on John the Baptist in Josephus is authentic. By way of that, I am also tinkering a little with a general-purpose web-based Gree...

Re: Is There a Trial of Jesus in Luke?
Who crucified Jesus in Luke? 23 But they were urgent, demanding with loud cries that he should be crucified. And their voices prevailed. 24 So Pilate decided that their demand should be granted. 25 He released the man who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, for whom they asked,...

Re: A brief note about Hebrews 13.11-13
But what would be that camp in the early first century? Hebrews 13.11-13: For the bodies of those animals whose blood is brought into the holy place by the high priest as an offering for sin, are burned outside the camp. Therefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people through his own blood,...

Re: A brief note about Hebrews 13.11-13
The following is a good example of exactly the sort of thing this brief note of mine was meant to put into perspective: The historical tradition that is being "forced" to fit into the sacrificial system of Leviticus 16 is that Jesus was executed outside the city. That is why the author ref...

Re: Is There a Trial of Jesus in Luke?
there is also no Passover amnesty in Luke Sinaiticus, W, Δ, Θ, Ψ, ƒ1, ƒ13, and various minuscules added one in at Luke 23.17. (I am wondering what an ancient readership would have made of 22.18 without 22.17; why is the crowd clamoring for Barabbas to be released instead of Jesus if there is no cus...

Re: Is the TF creedal ?
Ben Smith in another thread and Hopper in an important recent article, both referred to the TF in Josephus as similar to early Christian creedal affirmations and hence probably inauthentic. IMO creedal is not the best word. The TF does not particularly resemble early creeds (narrow sense). There is...

Re: Josephus' TF the source for Tacitus' reference to Jesus?
Ben, Thought I'd share a link to an article I found by Viklund that explains the Agapius vs. Michael issue well. I didn't know anything about Michael so I appreciate your bringing him to my attention. https://rogerviklund.wordpress.com/category/kyrkofader/agapius/#_edn1 You are quite welcome, and t...

Re: Josephus' TF the source for Tacitus' reference to Jesus?
That's what I'm thinking, that Justin is citing a summary of Christian beliefs (since he says "I say" and "we will show"). I only mean that if I had to choose between Josephus or Tacitus as a possible influence here, then I would pick Josephus (if there was some kind of a TF at ...

Re: Josephus' TF the source for Tacitus' reference to Jesus?
Regarding whether Justin's creedal statement was influenced by Josephus or Tacitus, I couldn't say if it was, but I know that he cites Josephus, and I don't know if he cites Tacitus. And if he doesn't cite the latter, then I would assume, if anything, he was influenced by the former. I do not think...
