Re: Josephus' TF the source for Tacitus' reference to Jesus?

Well perhaps we can bring it back into context. In the Josephus passage, so-called, then there is -no- statement about Jesus being Christ... unless one thinks that the passage was unedited. The distinction is made that Jesus is "called the Christ" (20.200 and 18.63 both allegedly have suc...

Re: A Plausible Reading of Mark, Well-Done with a Side of Ra

I've often wondered whether in Mark 15:21 might be a direct OT-allusion. I have found nothing that could convince me. But a good candidate seemed to be Jeremiah 3:14. Therefore I will add it. Maybe it convinces others more than me. LXX-Jeremiah 3:14-17 14 Turn, ye children that have revolted, saith...

Re: Josephus' TF the source for Tacitus' reference to Jesus?

This is pure speculation on my part. I'm curious if anyone has ever attempted any serious scholarly work on determining whether Tacitus used Josephus' writings as a source, and if so, whether Tacitus' description of Jesus (as the instigator of a superstition who was crucified under Pilate) may have...

Hi All, Perhaps we should think of lines of text in the gospels as members of the Avengers. They come and go, expand and shrink, and change. Original Avengers Issue #1, had these members of "The Avengers": Iron Man Thor Henry Pym - Ant Man became Giant Man in Avengers #2, became Goliath i...

Thank you for your response. That seems to be a common reaction to Alexander and Rufus. :) We may just never know for certain.

Hi, Roger. You explain Simon here; but who would Alexander and Rufus themselves be? Or what do they symbolize? Why the unusual inversion, identifying sons of a character in the narrative when those sons play no part in it? Any thoughts on the sons?

The link to the scans is here: http://textexcavation.com/irenaeusah.html . The overall source is the edition by W. Wigan Harvey. Re: A Marcionite Antithesis behind Jesus Bar-Abbas?

Ben Ezra highlights Matthew's redactional changes to Mark's account of Barabbas showing how the former is lurching Mark's account much more precisely into a midrashic working of the Levitical sacrifices. This leaves me with growing doubts that Mark did mean a link with the sacrifices. I too have he...

Re: Irenaeus of Lyons (yes, "Lyons"). TransMission E-Mission

We have the following reasons to doubt that either are original to Irenaeus of Lyons: 1) In general, Irenaeus did not explicitly quote much from GMark. 2) The two quotes just happen to be two of the most famous Textual Criticism issues of GMark. 3) For the two quotes Textual Criticism indicates tha...
