Re: Mark 16:9-20 as Forgery or Fabrication by Richard Carrie
My understanding is that most scholars who regard the LE as "forgery or fabrication" also regard it as a very early remedy to the problematic ending of GMark. Are there any other medieval witnesses to the short ending? My understanding is that orthodoxy resolved the issue many centuries ea...

Re: Mark 16:9-20 as Forgery or Fabrication by Richard Carrie
Joe, I think the main thrust of his argument (which I agree is poorly worded) is that the commentary in 304 appears to be dependent upon a commentary which is well-known from other manuscripts (and which included commentary of the LE), and it is therefore unlikely that 304's scribe excised 16:9-20 w...

Re: Marcion and John the Baptist
That's the problem with this forum too much book knowledge. I'd say that's a long way down the list of problems. The far greater problem is good threads like this one, which start out with a well-researched proposition and genuine inquiry for feedback and collaboration, become hijacked by personali...

Earliest attested reference to Son of Man
Who is the earliest church father to explicitly quote one of Jesus' references to himself as the Son of Man?

Re: Marcion: "thy country"
Does that mean Marcion referred to Nazareth as Jesus' homeland? Is that surprising? I mean, if he descended from heaven into Capernaum, how could Nazareth be his homeland? That Nazareth passage makes little sense coming as it does before the events in Capernaum -- given that it refers to those even...

Marcion: "thy country"
Apologies if this has been discussed previously... 4: 16 And he came to Nazareth, and went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and sat down. 21 And he began to speak to them, and all wondered at the words which proceeded out of his mouth. 23 And he said unto them, Ye will surely say unto me this ...

Re: My review of Richard Carrier's "On the Historicity of Je
Apparently there is a 1 in 12,000 chance that the figure described in the NT, one Jesus of Nazareth, is a historical figure. I'm not a mathematician, I don't understand Bayes Theorem, and I haven't read anything Richard Carrier has written. My "to read list" is long and doesn't include any...

Quantitative Literary Picture at end of 2nd Century
Obviously this question is highly speculative, however scholarship has probably had a good stab at the probabilities... If the Muratorian Canon is mid-second-century, as is suggested, then most NT documents were known (assumedly in final form) by this date. So the question is... how many copies of t...

Re: Baptism before John
This Jews for Jesus site also discusses baptism (with these excerpts): John's title, "Baptist" (literally baptizer), comes from the Greek verb baptidzo, which carries the same meaning as the Hebrew root taval: to wash by dipping or plunging in water. Does the Greek verb baptidzo occur in ...
