Re: The first Gospel: surprise, indifference or hostility?
I have not been following this thread with anything resembling close attention, but I did notice my name. Just to make sure everyone is on the same page here, (A) the work is that of Roth and BeDuhn, not of me personally; (B) the words underlined in boldfaced blue are attested as unique to Marcion;...

Re: The first Gospel: surprise, indifference or hostility?
Maybe you should concede that there is no Jewish text referring to a crucified Messiah? Apart the Odes (where it's only a mere possibility) I concede I don't see reference to crucifixion per se. But I suspect that you have an interest in hyper-defining the presumed originality of a crucifixion. The...

Re: The first Gospel: surprise, indifference or hostility?
I am sorry this is not quoting any Jewish text. As it appears your answer is – read all these posts yourself rather than pointing me to the right ones, would I be correct to assume you do not know of any at all? (If you think Vridar found one saying the Messiah will be crucified please let me know ...

Re: The first Gospel: surprise, indifference or hostility?
Please quote the Jewish text that states that the Messiah would be crucified? You can find as many as you here from Vridar: vridar.org/2015/11/09/and-now-its-barts-turn/ Or has Ehrman not yet had time at least to consider any of the highly suggestive evidence presented by Thomas L. Thompson, Jon D....

Re: The first Gospel: surprise, indifference or hostility?
A dying messiah (beyond if mythical or historical) is not a surprise for Jews. A *crucified* messiah is not a surprise for Jews. An oral Christianity - the pre-gospel Christianity - was a very little movement of no surprise and no originality (see the silence of Josephus and Philo to begin) and suc...

Re: The first Gospel: surprise, indifference or hostility?
As the first listeners were Jews they would have been surprised because they did not expect the Messiah to be crucified by Gentiles and his Messianic status to be confirmed by his being raised by God as a separate act before the final inauguration of the Messianic age. Those Jews and Gentiles who w...

Re: The first Gospel: surprise, indifference or hostility?
But perhaps you should clarify by what you mean by "the first Gospel", as this is a departure from 'the canonical gospels". This is the right place to start. The first gospel was an oral message of “good news” and sometime it is called the Kerygma and I think it was: Jesus is the Mes...

Re: the Paul & Marcion 'dynamic' & back-dating
Lena Einhorn, PhD Thats why her work is laughable Wouldn’t it be better if instead of a sweeping statement you had pointed out why her work is laughable? (I don’t think she has a PhD in theology but she is a medical doctor with a PhD in Virology and Tumor Biology.) I remember reading S G F Brandon ...

Re: the Paul & Marcion 'dynamic' & back-dating
I agree it is reasonable to propose and argue that a lot of stuff has been back-dated. Lena Einhorn presented a good argument for a block of Josephus narratives about people and events in the mid 1st century having been back-dated into the Christian narratives - JESUS AND THE “EGYPTIAN PROPHET” Len...

Re: Carrier proposes the NT Jesus based on Philo's Jesus ang
If people today look behind the Old Testament texts and find features they wish to state New Testament writers used they must demonstrate that those texts were read that way when the New Testament text was written. I note that there is no reference for Yahweh being one of the sons of El Elyon. Is t...
