Re: Did Jesus say do not swear oaths (Mt 5:33-37)?
...but the Greek of the rest is not a close match to either Luke or Mark, but still there is the issue of the movement of “my chosen” being at the end as in Luke and being a change from “little ones” which is likely to be the earlier text. You again seem to be operating in a world in which the numb...

Re: Did Jesus say people should not divorce?
I think you will agree that there are a lot of contingencies ("if", "likely", "possible") in that assessment. It may all be correct; it may not be. As I have mentioned, I have no horse in that race; but a discussion of the historicity (or even the historical background...

Re: Did Jesus say people should not divorce?
Therefore Mark verse 12 is unlikely to go back to Jesus because it reflects the Roman law situation of Christians in Rome and not Jews in Palestine during the time of Jesus. The bounceback for this position has always been that the female half of the saying could have been aimed, not at Jewish prac...

Did Jesus say people should not divorce?
Mt 5:31-32 [31] "It was also said, `Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.' [32] But I say to you that every one who divorces his wife, except on the ground of unchastity, makes her an adulteress; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery." Lk 16:...

Re: Did Jesus say do not swear oaths (Mt 5:33-37)?
FWIW I tend to think it more likely that Clement knew Q or oral tradition rather than written Matthew or Luke. I tend to agree (with the possible substitution of "catechetical materials" for "Q"). This was the conclusion in The New Testament in the Apostolic Fathers of 1905, and...

Re: The Twelve Disciples created by the Jerusalem Church
... Paul talks of Christians in Damascus and Arabia. We know it travelled to Egypt and Rome, but we have no idea if the growth in Aramaic speaking areas was slower than in Greek speaking areas. It's possible Paul was not referring to Jesus-following Christians, but preliminary sects of a more nebul...

Re: How Much of the Gospel is Actual History
Let's break this down in picture form. The worse post I have ever seen, which reals your contempt for people. Your claims are idiotic and not based on the facts but your own prejudice. Am HaAretz, as found in the bible usually means nothing more than the common people, as opposed to the nobility , ...

Re: The Twelve Disciples created by the Jerusalem Church
I wonder if a case may be made that 1 Cor 15:3-11 was written yes by Paul, but was total fiction, meaning that Paul invented ex novo the tradition Any discussion of 1 Cor 15:3-11 has to address the argument that lots of it does not appear to be in the normal style of Paul. The majority view is that...

Re: The Twelve Disciples created by the Jerusalem Church
My point Is these traditions are more likely to come from the Passover celebrations where the followers in the Diaspora met every year and shared information. While I am not sure about the link between the Jerusalem church and its creation of the twelve disciples as presented by Van Aarde, at least...

Re: Did Jesus say do not swear oaths (Mt 5:33-37)?
IMO the letter of Clement to the Corinthians (1 Clement) alludes to James (e.g. references to being double minded). If so it is 1st century, though maybe late 1st century, which makes use of Matthew improbable. Andrew Criddle I think the traditional date for 1 Clement is c. 96 CE. It seems he knows...
