Re: My summary of current assessment of Christian origins

I.e. it looks very much like a proto-Marcionite setting. because Marcionite and non-Marcionite Christians looked very much alike. I do like the idea of thinking about proto-Marcionites because there isn't necessarily that much original theologically about Marcion. Yup. There is one detail in Pliny'...

Re: My summary of current assessment of Christian origins

A serious quarrel among scholars concerning its genuineness arose between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th; Its pretty amazing how non-original most NT scholarship is these days.....the dutch radicals already wrote about everything scholars have written in both the past 100...

Re: james eusebius and alexandria

We also have the way the History of the Episcopate of Alexandria lists the early history of the bishops of Alexandria as 255 years from Annianus to Peter without including Mark. (There is clearly something wrong with the figure 255 but I don't think this affects my point. ) Also Eusebius Church Hist...

Re: Jewish Version of "The Twelve Days of Christmas"

It seems closer to Green Grow the Rushes than to the twelve days of Christmas.

Do we have any ancient sources that say Annanias, rather than Mark, was the first bishop of Alexandria?

Best,

Apostolic Constitutions
Of Alexandria, Annianus was the first, ordained by Mark the evangelist; the second Avilius by Luke, who was also an evangelist.

In favour of the 7th year of Nero for the accession of Annianus as bishop of Alexandria we have: History_of_the_Episcopate_of_Alexandria Māriqos Evangelist entered ʾAlǝksǝndǝ<r>yā on the seventh year of Neronǝs; 1 he appointed 12 presbyters and seven deacons, and he gave them the following rule... ...

Re: Cost of codex vs scroll?

Excellent question. Pericope Adulterae. It is not found in the oldest manuscripts. Then someone attaches it to Luke. Then someone else joins it to John, but in a different place than it is today. And only then does it reach its final destination in John. Syndication and the use of codexws in their ...

Re: Why Historical Apologetics is Useless

This seems to assume that either the historical evidence for Christian claims is taken in isolation compelling (which it isn't), or that such evidence is irrelevant or useless. In general this is not how we come to assent to the views we actually hold. We give or withhold assent in disputed cases th...
