Re: Why the Certainty on the Part of Mythicists?
IMHO the issue is not that mythicists claim dogmatically that there was no historical Jesus. The issue is the claim that some reasonably specific alternative, (e.g. the idea that Christianity started with the worship of an obviously non-historical figure who was later historicized), is probably true...

Re: The Biggest Lie in the Study of Earliest Christianity
How historical is Abul Fath's account ?
Among other issues the historical Alexander of Aphrodisias seems to have been largely active from the time of Severus on. He does not appear to have been a prominent figure in the time of Commodus.

Re: Thoughts on Maurice Casey's new book
So we're back to, the Gospel according to the Hebrews was written in Hebrew and no proto-Aramaic gospel is ever attested before the Pelagian controversies at the end of Jerome's life and text was ridiculed by Jerome's opponents (who called him 'the Aramaean') saying that he falsified the reading he...

Re: Thoughts on Maurice Casey's new book
I want the reader to pay close attention to the citation from the Gospel according to the Hebrews: “Behold, the mother of our Lord and His brethren said to Him, John Baptist baptizes for the remission of sins; let us go and be baptized by him. But He said to them, what sin have I committed that I s...

Re: Thoughts on Maurice Casey's new book
But that's nonsense. The citations that Jerome gives from the Gospel according to the Hebrews are often completely at odds with Matthew. Origen must have been using the same text at the Caesarea library and produces even wilder references. If the historical Jesus wasn't at stake I don't think you'd...

Re: Thoughts on Maurice Casey's new book
and this from Origen's own Commentary on Matthew: It is written in a certain Gospel which is called according to the Hebrews (if at elast any one care to accept it, not as authoritative, but to throw light on the question before us): The second of the rich men (it saith) said unto him: Master, what...

Re: Thoughts on Maurice Casey's new book
As Edwards notes, this text written in Syriac is explicitly identified in Pelagius as the Gospel of Matthew (“iuxta Matthaeum”). In various other references Jerome is not simply ascribing the Hebrew Gospel to the gospel of Matthew but rather as one which ubiquitously identified with Matthew. The id...

Re: Thoughts on Maurice Casey's new book
A good point but the various statements in Jerome suggest that he is dealing with a targum (translation) of the original Hebrew text that he came across in his travels: http://books.google.com/books?id=Vs9YXAB_axYC&pg=PA32&dq=%22the+use+of+sermone+in+the+singular+suggests+that%22&hl=en&...

Re: Aquila and Prisca Two Male Apostles in a Gay Marriage?
........................................................ 8. There is a vigorous debate regarding Romans 16:7 and the reference to an Apostle named either Junia (female) or Junias (male). The manuscript evidence is ambiguous. This indicates that early Christians disagreed if apostles could be female...

Re: Thoughts on Maurice Casey's new book
Jerome Against the Pelagians Book 3 seems relevant. In the Gospel according to the Hebrews, which is written in the Chaldee and Syrian language, but in Hebrew characters , and is used by the Nazarenes to this day (I mean the Gospel according to the Apostles, or, as is generally maintained, the Gospe...
