Re: Thoughts on Maurice Casey's new book

What I meant was that Casey is correct in claiming that ShBRA existed as a name for a herb in the Aramaic of the time of Jesus. (Which was what Steven Carr queried.) What part of Casey's 'does not survive in the Aramaic of our period' did you find unclear? http://www.tyndale.cam.ac.uk/Tyndale/staff...

Re: Thoughts on Maurice Casey's new book

Casey's arguments are sometimes even stranger. He makes a huge deal about Luke 11:42 being a translation of a certain Aramaic words, and then quite candidly admits 'The word does not survive in the Aramaic of our period, but this is merely because the few extant texts do not include any discussion ...

Re: Thoughts on Maurice Casey's new book

Steven, those are some pretty good examples of why I believe Paul was a real person writing real things. There are simply too many examples that just don't make much sense for someone else to write. Sure, it could happen, and SOME things could have been written by someone else but not ALL of them.....

Re: The name Metatron for Enoch in ascent texts

He argues that the most significant part of the term “Metatron” (מטטרון) is the first three consonants of this word, namely, MTT (מטט), since the suffix RON (רון) is a technical addition which represents a common feature of the various angelic names in Jewish angelological writings. Mopsik conclude...

Re: Thoughts on Maurice Casey's new book

What some other scholars say about Casey's arguments in The Aramaic Approach to Q : <SNIP>Extracts from Reviews</SNIP> I think we should distinguish between Casey's claim that Q was originally Aramaic (or mostly Aramaic), where he speaks as an expert in a specialised field. And Casey's claims as to...

Re: Thoughts on Maurice Casey's new book

It takes a certain kind of scholar to raise a huge hypothetical edifice about existing Greek documents and base his theories on hypothetical Aramaic sources featuring Aramaic words which he has to admit are not found in texts of that period! Excellent, very well written, in my opinion. According to...
