Harnack's Great Reversal on the Dating of Luke and Acts
Writing on the omission of the phrase ‘the Abomination of Desolation’ in the Gospel of Luke (21:20-24), which appears in Mark and Matthew, Harnack provides the following concluding remarks: ‘ There is nothing in these verses that compels us to assume, or even suggests to us, that the destruction of ...

Re: The Epistle to Diognetus - A 1st century tract ...
If the author was seeking credibility for a written work by spurious means, he could have claimed in the writing of it to 'be' an apostle, not just a mere disciple. So, the question remains, what could a writer have hoped to gain by composing this work in the post Temple period of the first century ...

Re: The Epistle to Diognetus - A 1st century tract ...
Many believe that Acts was written 2nd century, post-temple, and that it intentionally stops where it does to make it seem near contemporaneous with the events it portrays. I don't see why this epistle couldn't be doing the same. (Because of disbelief re the Gospel's prophecy of the Temple's destru...

Re: 1 Timothy 5:18 and Luke 10:7
Thanks Ben. It just shows how impressions can be reinforced according to the fellowship one keeps and how necessary it is to be challenged by others who do not share the same view. If the final form of Luke has an AD150+ origin (not referenced by name until Ireneaus), and the pastorals are also AD1...

Re: 1 Timothy 5:18 and Luke 10:7
Well, I think few doubt that Paul wrote the letters to Timothy and, as these two texts are a perfect match, it would seem highly likely that Paul had access to Luke's Gospel or had heard directly from Luke himself. It would be interesting to note how many other correlations can be found that might ...

Re: The Epistle to Diognetus - A 1st century tract ...
I'm doubtful whether chapters 11-12 can come from the 1st century CE. Passages like 11:6: Whereupon the fear of the law is sung, and the grace of the prophets is recognised, and the faith of the gospels is established, and the tradition of the apostles is preserved, and the joy of the Church exults...

Re: 1 Timothy 5:18 and Luke 10:7
It is interesting to note that Luke was a close co-worker with Paul and assisted his ministry. He is mentioned in 2 Tim.4:11 as a loyal companion. The close correlation regarding the verses in question could indicate that Luke had already recorded the words of Christ in his Gospel and that Paul made...

Thanks Peter. (My mention regarding the spelling was just a general comment.)

Re: The Epistle to Diognetus - A 1st century tract ...
I do wonder whether Annals 15.44 might not be correct -- that they were "called Chrestians by the populace" -- specifically, around AD 64 in Rome. If so, there is a window of time there, prior to the destruction of the Temple (and after Paul's letters, which generally do not use the term)...
