Re: What to make of another "talking cross" in the Acts of Philip
It seems unlikely that both texts should independently come to require the same emendation. Andrew Criddle Then again, you don't read about walking talking crosses every day, either. Well, I mean I don't. In any case, the argument is Goodacre's, so I leave its defense or refutation to others better...

Re: A great obstacle to Marcionite priority: Jesus ben Ananias
Klinghardt's point is that Mark 'romanized' the torturers because he was embarrassed by their being Jews in Marcion's Evangelion . Hence if K is right, then he couldn't do so as interested to derive from Josephus's Jesus ben Ananias. OK, in which case Mark having depicted both Roman and Jewish mock...

Re: A great obstacle to Marcionite priority: Jesus ben Ananias
not just so "closer", however. In Marcion Pilate only says so but without applying really the torture, differently than in Mark, where the Roman soldiers apply really it. Yes, but we're discussing possible influences among works of literature. One of the ideas in Josephus's tale of his Je...

Re: A great obstacle to Marcionite priority: Jesus ben Ananias
GMark seems to have at 14:65 (set at the Temple) Some began to spit on him, and to cover his face, and to beat him with fists, and to tell him, “Prophesy!” The officers struck him with the palms of their hands. something that corresponds with Marcion's 22:63-65 (also at the Temple) And the men that ...

Re: What to make of another "talking cross" in the Acts of Philip
Mark Goodacre's solution for the Gospel of Peter may be a candidate explanation for the Acts of Philip https://ntweblog.blogspot.com/2010/10/walking-talking-cross-or-walking.html My suggestion is that we conjecturally emend the text from σταυρον to σταυρωθεντα, from "cross" to "crucif...

Re: Carrier, Doherty and GDon's 10th year anniversary of not posting about mythicism!
I describe my own approach as: "Some kind of a historical Jesus is the best explanation for the existence of the earliest texts that we have, but the amount of verifiable evidence is so little that he may as well not have existed." Now that you have formulated your approach and position, ...

Re: "5:3"
The first of those two clauses is similar with Pr. of Man. verse 5, and the second clause is similar with Pr. of Man. verse 3. It is therefore entirely clear why he lists verse 5 first rather than verse 3, so that the order of corresponding elements agree. Regardless, there is nothing remarkable ab...

Re: Carrier, Doherty and GDon's 10th year anniversary of not posting about mythicism!
I have no hard evidence for what follows, but I doubt if most of this 20% are supporters of Doherty/Carrier type mythicism. I, too, doubt that. Regardless, that isn't what people were asked (in the polls I have in mind). I suspect that many of them would regard Don's extremely minimal historicism (...

Re: Origen explains why the name of Pilate is mentioned by Justin only in exorcisms
That's nice. The fact remains that what you cited from Origen offers no mention of either Justin or Pilate.Hence the title of the thread is correct.

Re: Origen explains why the name of Pilate is mentioned by Justin only in exorcisms
There is nothing about Pilate or Justin in the chapter you cite. The closest Origen comes there to describing a Christian exorcism (or other magical) formula is the last sentence of I.6: But even if it be impossible to show by what power Jesus wrought these miracles, it is clear that Christians empl...
