Re: How do we know the ancient Romans didn’t destroy most of the evidence for Jesus?
archibald Is this your way of explaining the timeline discrepancy between Josephus' account of J the B's death and the Christian one? No, just illustrating the difficulty of holding the reader when telling a tale featuring wheels within wheels, with the resulting near-inevitability of "hops.&q...

Ooops... wrong thread

Re: How do we know the ancient Romans didn’t destroy most of the evidence for Jesus?
archibald would the current order not still work if Pilate's time in office started at 19CE? What got me interested was the argument against the received TF, that it "interrupts the flow" of the Pilate block. On length grounds alone, TF couldn't possibly interrupt the flow as much as &quo...

Re: Where is the more strong evidence in Paul pointing to an outer space Jesus
Ben If we presume that, for Paul, Jesus was raised in the distant past but only recently revealed to the apostles, we must take pains to account for this gap; why, for Paul, did Jesus die in order to end the law and justify humans but then wait indefinitely before making this justification availabl...

archibald To add to this....do the passages in Antiquities after the TF relate to events around 19-21CE? The expulsion of Jews from Rome by Tiberius comes after and wasn't it in 19CE? What follows the received TF is a "sandwich" (Mark might approve). The "wrapper" of the passage...

Re: The Lost Chapter of Epiphanius' Panarion
Ben This does not strike me as a claim that Jesus did not exist. This strikes me as a claim that nobody understood what Jesus really was (to wit, Simon in a docetic disguise). Fair enough. The claim being addressed was: The short answer is they didn't exist in antiquity My counterclaim to that was ...

Re: The Lost Chapter of Epiphanius' Panarion
Kapyong Bravo  Secret Alias The short answer is they didn't exist in antiquity That's hard to say. Cyril of Jerusalem (writing about 350) understands the Simonian claims to have been that Jesus was a character created by Simon. What Cyril says disambiguates a line of analysis of Simonianism ru...

Re: How do we know the ancient Romans didn’t destroy most of the evidence for Jesus?
andrew FWIW the papacy and the Church of the East appear to have briefly been in communion in the late 13th century. Yes, I think there may have been quite a bit of politics over the centuries. The ACE hasn't been in full communion with the Eastern Orthodox, either. It can be awkward for a small cr...

Re: How do we know the ancient Romans didn’t destroy most of the evidence for Jesus?
We don't know, but a lot else has to be true for the hypothesis to be true. First, obviously, there once had to have been more evidence for Jesus than is extant. The chances of that in turn depend on whether or not there was a historical Jesus. If those are granted, then most of the evidence needed ...

Re: How Do You Disprove Mythicism?
Secret Alias ... that ... Richard Carrier should have personalized what could quite reasonably have been a movement which questioned the certainty we have inherited about the historicity of Jesus. But (to all appearances), that simply isn't his objective. He is playing for the brass ring of uncerta...
