Re: dying and rising gods

I don't know about Vedic gods, but Osiris and Horus were definitely gods of resurrection in Egypt. Horus of the Netherworld is born from Osiris in the underworld, is killed by Set and mummified along with his father, and both rise to life with Re at dawn. This is from the Middle Kingdom text, Creati...

Re: Why was Christ called "Joshua"?

With all due respect I think you're not getting this. Giuseppe is asking why Christ is named Joshua. Not as to what the etymology of Christ is. Cyrus was not named Joshua. It may very be that Joshua the High priest was Ezra, with Joshua being more so an honourary title rather than a name proper. In ...

Re: Why was Christ called "Joshua"?

Not to argue or belabour the point, but I'm thinking of this as one living when the Jesus story was still in its preliminary stages. Though Cyrus the Great is a messianic figure to the Daniel author(s), by the first-second centuries, such prominence would be either lost, or redirected in the ensuing...

Re: Why was Christ called "Joshua"?

Of course the Moses/Joshua dichotomy should be considered, as it's Moses who is destined to die and Joshua to enter the Holy land. (Just as Jesus dies, while another is released). Joshua could be the Angel of the Lord, who's name is Man, but that's not readily apparent to me. Do you know of any rabb...

Re: Did Mark know the epistles of Paul?

My own perspective is that John and Mark are extensions of the Pauline tradition, perhaps originally a single text, later separated for whatever reason.

Re: Why was Christ called "Joshua"?

The first part of Proverbs 2:21 in the Septuagint is absent in the Masoretic. 2:21 χρηστοὶ ἔσονται οἰκήτορες γῆς ἄκακοι δὲ ὑπολειφθήσονται ἐν αὐτῇ ὅτι εὐθεῖς κατασκηνώσουσι γῆν καὶ ὅσιοι ὑπολειφθήσονται ἐν αὐτῇ εὐθεῖς is the translation off יָשָׁר εὐθύς - straight, upright יָשָׁר - Straight, uprigh...

Re: Why was Christ called "Joshua"?

In the Septuagint, χρηστός is used to translate ישר in Proverbs 2:21. That’s interesting because ישר appears as the prefix for ישראל, Israel. Supposing for a moment the usage of pesher and midrash, it’s well within the realm of possibility that Chrestus was interpretative of Jacob’s wrestling with t...

Re: Is Joseph of Arimathea really the best disciple?

if a switch happened (= Basilidean/Islamic apocrypha) Joseph us one logical candidate. Makes more sense than Simon. Considering the allegorical nature of the text; the fleeing youth, Lazarus, Barabbas, Simon of Cyrene, and Joseph of Arimathea, all signify the same theological interpretation, perhap...

Re: Is it true that John of Giscala put end to the sacrifices in the temple?

I have argued (conjectured?) elsewhere my opinion that Simon of Cyrene was indeed the Beloved disciple and that the Synoptics were merely moving him further down the trough, as it were. Curious that John doesn't have Simon of Cyrene, proper, only Lazarus. To me this signifies the Johannine priority ...

Re: Which of the NT characters do you take to be definitively historical?

It depends how you regard what "historical" means. Do you mean, as actually existing in how they are presented in the New Testament? or, historical as in they were real but allegorized and approximated by the New Testament authors? If the former, then I would say none of these figures are ...
