Re: The name 'Jesus' in the Pauline epistles
I have been wondering about the origin of the name "Jesus." Both the New Testament framing and the saga of modern Jesus scholarship tell the story of a man's humble origin in Nazareth (or Bethlehem), where his parent(s) named him Jesus. One and done. From a mythicist perspective, however, ...

Re: The Canon
Is it "the Gospel of the New Testament" or "the New Testament of the Gospel" ? The latter: "the word of the New Testament of the Gospel." The phrase is τῷ τῆς τοῦ εὐαγγελίου καινῆς διαθήκης λόγῳ, which utilizes one of Greek's most elegant features, IMHO: nested noun ph...

Re: The Canon
I'm sure this has already been discussed elsewhere, but consider the text of this letter that seems to count in favor of the early existence of a published text called The New Testament . Eusebius cites it at EH 5.16.3 and attributes it to an anonymous anti-Montanist writer quoted at EH 5.16.3. πλεί...

Re: The Canon
If Constantine had endorsed and established a materially different NT (e.g., one that excluded the six texts Eusebius considers "disputed" in the Ecclesiastical History: Hebrews, James, 2 Peter, 2 & 3 John, Jude, and Revelation), I don't see how that could fail to provoke a controvers...

Re: The Canon
Regarding, - But [the key Christian texts] did not become The Canon in the sense of (2) until the 4th century, and there is no great mystery why. Because the 4th [century] emperors imposed Christianity as the state religion of the whole Mediterranean, both with respect to the orthodoxy of doctrine,...

Re: The Canon
Irish1975 -- I bring this up, not to be argumentative, but to inquire as to the nature of what we are presented: Obviously there was Marcion's Bible, and much other Christian literature... Is this True? Or is it assumed as True for the purpose of making progress in the Exposition of the Early Churc...

Re: The Canon
If David Trobisch is right that the 27-book New Testament came into existence in the 2nd century as a published book, what remains of the idea of "the canon"? Is it rendered a merely a theological concept, not essentially related to the actual creation of the Christian Bible in historical...

Re: Deconstructed Letters of Paulos
We recently had an extended debate about both the integrity and the authenticity of Romans 15 (and to a lesser extent 16).

Re: Was Paul the First to Assert that Jesus was Crucified?
It seems that the crucifixion is mentioned only once in Romans, at 6:6: We know that our old self was crucified with him so that the sinful body might be destroyed, and we might no longer be enslaved to sin. Thus, in Romans, Paul shows no interest in the crucifixion as a historical event, but merely...
