Re: Two Jameses in Galatians: Harmony with Mark and Luke-Acts
It looks to me that in the first century, "James" with no identification was understood to be James, the brother of Jesus. If 1) instead of reading Luke-Acts as a unit, you read Matthew-Acts, and 2) if you keep 2 Cor 15:7 in mind--"Then He appeared to James, then to all the apostles....

Re: "son of Joseph" mentioned in the Josippon appears to confirm Hierocles about Jesus
So the Josippon : In those days, there was fighting and dissension in Judea between the Pharisees and the 'brigands of our people' who followed the son of Joseph , etc ...[ lacuna ] Eleazar, who committed great crimes in Israel until the Pharisees overcame him." This appears to confirm what th...

Re: "I lie not": Combining Gal 1:20 with 2 Cor 11:31
Paul's twin claims--"I lie not--in Gal 1:20 and in 2 Cor 11:31 have several parallels. 1) Association with a Place: "Damascus" is part of the scenario 2) A time span of "fourteen years" frames key events 3) An event: "revelation" 4) Counter-claims of "psuedob...

Re: dating the birth stories?
Hi Cora, As you may know, I come at these texts in the mainline Christian way. I study them as scripture first, and only marginally as history to be taught in university history departments. So when did legit history of the church begin? Surely, Constantine's conversion would make the cut. Before th...

Re: The peculiar case of the serpents and the doves
In the past when I've studied Matthew's and Thomas's versions, I thought of both reflecting wisdom of the wondering charismatics who were sent out by Jesus two by two with nothing but the clothes on their backs. This meant spending time in the paths between towns, and in nature with the doves and th...

Re: The genealogies of Matthew & Luke
Among those who assume GLuke was written after GMark, with knowledge of GMark, it has been argued that GLuke eliminated GMark's (Cf GMatthew's) stories of the mother and brothers of Jesus because they didn't fit the wisdom-image of Mary in GLuke's infancy narrative.

Re: A strange anomaly in Mark 14:41
The imperative form ("sleep on...take") is found in the King James Version, which is of course influential among English-language translations. I don't quite understand why the KJV translates it as a question in Mark 14:37 and not in Mark 14:41. Both times the verb is in Present Indicativ...

Re: A strange anomaly in Mark 14:41

Literal Standard Version And He comes the third time and says to them, “ Sleep on from now on, and rest—it is over ; the hour came; behold, the Son of Man is delivered up into the hands of the sinful; That literal rendering is odd!
