Re: A thought on the mystery of the passion of the Christ.
Justin says that the demons knew in advance the plan of God about the Son since they did make any Pagan mystery a parody of the death and resurrection of the Son. Interestingly, in Ephesians 3 Paul says: This is the reason that I Paul am a prisoner for Christ Jesus for the sake of you Gentiles— 2 f...

Re: Why crucifixion?
This remembers Acts of Peter, 37: "It is right to mount upon the cross of Christ, who is the word stretched out, the one and only, of whom the spirit saith: For what else is Christ, but the word, the sound of God So that the word is the upright beam whereon I am crucified. And the sound is tha...

Re: Why crucifixion?
Good ones. I have added them. I forgot this one: Plato, Phaedo, 83d http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/hopper/text?doc=Perseus%3Atext%3A1999.01.0170%3Atext%3DPhaedo%3Apage%3D83: Because each pleasure or pain nails it[the soul] as with a nail to the body and rivets it on and makes it corporeal, so that it...

Re: Celsus: "no God or son of God has come down or will come down"
From what I understand, the Platonists didn't take myths literally. So they didn't think a son of god like Heracles or Dionysus literally lived on earth.

Re: Why crucifixion?
What are other viable options? I consider it possible that the gospels are allegories for what the "soul" goes through when incarnated into the "flesh" or physical body. Jesus representing the spiritual aspect in everyone. In the mystery cults initiates would perform a death and...

Re: The Egyptian Pharaoh identifies with a dying and rising god while being baptized
Thanks, but I mean the reference to the pagan source material, like "Pyramid Texts, Vol 3, Spell 11", at least when quoting that material directly. If you read the link I gave you he goes into where the translation is coming from. It's from different papyrus texts. There's also temple ins...

Re: The Egyptian Pharaoh identifies with a dying and rising god while being baptized
Could I ask you to provide references to the ACTUAL source material being used on the pagan side, please? Otherwise, all we have are people's translations of what they think some text might be. (There's already enough arguments on translations of Biblical passages for the Christian text side, even ...

The Egyptian Pharaoh identifies with a dying and rising god while being baptized
Romans 6:3–7 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. For if ...

A good website on parallels between Osiris and Jesus
If you're interested (I know some people are tired of this subject), there's a good website that goes into the parallels between Osiris and Jesus. The site is by D.N. Boswell who isn't a scholar but uses academic sources to back up what he's saying.

Re: Christianity and the Roman Imperial cult
Sueton: "Julius Marathus informs us, that a few months before his birth, there happened at Rome a prodigy, by which was signified that Nature was in travail with a king for the Roman people; and that the senate, in alarm, came to the resolution that no child born that year should be brought up...
