Re: Mark’s Use of Psalm 22 --- A Davidic Jesus?
I tend to see it the other way around. These events provide confirmation that Jesus is the Messiah even if they are not occurring in the expected way That's how I see it too. Mark had to somehow explain why Jesus is the “Christ”. I'm assuming that's the tradition the gospels are working from. A Mes...

Re: Mark’s Use of Psalm 22 --- A Davidic Jesus?
The author of GMark pushes back against the concept of a Davidic Jesus throughout his story. And the expectations of a king-like figure riding into Jerusalem on a young foal (Mark 11:1-7, Zechariah 9:9), and the expectations expressed by the crowd of a kingly redeemer, “Blessed is the coming of our...

Re: The Problem of Paul and Marcionism
Ebion, you mention negating the law being antinomian do you see a difference between simply 'fulfilling' the spirit of it and negating it as obsolete entirely? would you see the former being the gospel Jesus message and the latter being the epistles? this is how I tend to see it. I'm interested if y...

Re: Forgery of Acts
To be fair, I created the title. I suggest reading SA's posts to get a better sense of what he's saying. If it's not there, I guess ask questions. The fourth post in this thread is the starting point, which links to the earlier conversation. No need to hand hold all I saw was a bunch of posts by SA...

Re: Forgery of Acts
SA, a lot of people think it's early-mid 2nd century and not literally historical so it's not forged in one sense, it's a genuine 2nd century work of idealised history that doesn't tell us much about the first century but a whole lot about the time it was written for i think that's how critical scho...

Re: On the use of "historicists" to label the people absolutely persuaded about the historicity of Jesus
Joking aside... I don't think the statement "not only mythicists require an 'other' against whom [to] define themselves" is empirically true. I have seen a lot of books that don't ackowledge a non-HJ idea (while acknowledging ideas that require a HJ) but I have never seen a no-HJ book tha...

Re: The X-Files: Chrēstos / Christos / Χρειστος
It appears the usage of 'Chrest' forms is greatest in the epistles. I post the relevant section from ML's book below Whatever the meaning 'Chrest' has, one thing it cannot be is the Jewish Messiah who is 'Christ' in the LXX This suggests the epistles originate among proto-orthodox Christians who hav...

Re: minor spellings aside, any proposed cult of "Jesus the Good" evidence?
For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain 'Christ' is being treated like a quality here. 'to live is good/useful and to die is gain' i believe i was suggesting a Marcionite influence on 'Chrest' to distinguish from the Messiah (i do not say this proves which is earlier usage) also, the epistl...

Re: minor spellings aside, any proposed cult of "Jesus the Good" evidence?
I can't understand your mere claim and you don't give any reasons for it. The Greek word here is εὐωδία, which can best be translated as pleasant smell. It is obvious that an anointed one smells good, while this does not have to be the case with a good person and does not suggest itself as a metaph...
