Re: Bonkers parallels between Jesus and Mithras - examples?

Apologies for brevity - a bunch of newly translated stuff has come in, and I am trying to review and comment it and get it out of the door tonight!

Re: Bonkers parallels between Jesus and Mithras - examples?

richard carrier and harry mcall seem to agree that their is something pagan about christianity. Christian apologists strongly deny Greco-Roman pagan religious influence on the Jewish development of Jesus Christ, so any Christian apologist should have no trouble explaining the following paragraph fr...

Re: Bonkers parallels between Jesus and Mithras - examples?

So, probably ALL English authors who cite Mithra parallels get it from this ET.... I can't believe the no one seems to have summarized this evidence in English, but I strongly suspect that it is because it is COMPLETE HOOEY! We common people call these parallels, how you say, "highly imaginati...

Re: Bonkers parallels between Jesus and Mithras - examples?

According to Martin Larson, The Story of Christian Origins (1977), page 678 (chapter XII, endnote 15), the source for many of the claims is Texts et Monuments figures relatifs aux Mysteries de Mithra , by Franz Cumont (2 vols, 1896-99). I think there was a 2nd edition entitled Die Mysterien des Mit...

Re: Bonkers parallels between Jesus and Mithras - examples?

Higgins doesn't appear to give any citation for the above information. Thank you. Is it possible that this is really the root of the tree? That the sentence originally ran "the Christians had their twelve apostles" and was then clumsily edited to insert "(followers of Mithra)" o...

From this website: http://beginningandend.com/jesus-copy-horus-mithras-dionysis-pagan-gods/ http://beginningandend.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/Mitrhas-with-stars.jpg “Mithra had 12 disciples.” — This is based on the carving above which shows Mithras surrounded by 12 signs of the Zodiac. There is...

Re: Bonkers parallels between Jesus and Mithras - examples?

Acharya S in "The Christ Conspiracy" cites Higgins on the 12 disciples parallel with Mithra/Mithras. Using her cite and Google books, I found in Godfrey Higgins' "Anacalypsis an Attempt to Draw Aside the Veil of the Saitic Isis; or. an Inquiry into the Origin of Languages, Nations an...

Re: Bonkers parallels between Jesus and Mithras - examples?

If she didn't invent the stories in question (12 disciples etc) then where are the earlier examples? That's a genuine question btw. The earliest reference I can find to Mihtras having twelve disciples is a 1942 book The Sangamon it is unlikely that the author invented the idea but I can't trace it ...
