Re: Diachronicity in the Pentateuch - The Drunkenness of Noah (Gen 9:18-27)
Thanks, austendw, for this proposed instantiation of diachronicity. Without endorsing every detail above, myth and religion do appear to go far back. Perhaps neilgodfrey is busy elsewhere, painting views other than his own as, in effect, due to zombification. Thanks for the civil reference to me, S...

Re: Why the Hellenistic era hypothesis should be taken seriously
Since on this forum I have been called something of a "fanboy" of Russell Gmirkin I should make a couple of things clear. Yes, I like and am at the moment persuaded by Gmirkin's basic thesis. And for that reason it is necessary for me to be all the more critical of his work in order to not...

Re: Simon Gathercole: "The Historical and Human Existence of Jesus in Paul’s Letters"
Gathercole's argument is stupid and not worth paying attention to. Disputing the fundamentals of "interpolations" is just idiotic. Anyone arguing against interpolations is a moron. Unfortunately for me (because I am quite fond of the same interpolation hypotheses that you're advocating ab...

Re: Why the Hellenistic era hypothesis should be taken seriously
Philip Davies, a "minimalist" who argued for a Persian era origin of the biblical texts, identified the core of the problem in the orthodox models: the foundational hypotheses are grounded in circular reasoning. It is the same in NT studies that attempt to reconstruct Christian origins fro...

You have indeed. But you have yet to address Gmirkin's actual methods of scholarly inquiry and his reception among reputable scholars.StephenGoranson wrote: ↑Sun Jun 18, 2023 2:50 pm I have, in numerous posts, explained why I consider the c.273-272 Torah creation proposal to be false.

Why the Hellenistic era hypothesis should be taken seriously
The reason is simple. The hypothesis is born from the fundamentals of historical methods as practised by historians in fields other than biblical studies. Biblical scholars, it is no secret to anyone, not even to themselves on the whole, do have interests that go beyond pure historical research. The...

Stephen, none of your remarks actually addresses Gmirkin's scholarship, his methods, nor his reception among reputable scholars.

Re: What does 'anti-tempelian" mean ?
I will be picking up my series on the Jewish revolts of 115-117 again soon and setting out what various scholars have seen as evidence for a movement to rebuild the Temple in Jerusalem -- a movement that through a series of fiascos led to the another holocaust of the Jews in the eastern Mediterranea...

I have yet to see you fault or even address Russell's scholarship though you say it is not impressive, despite some very highly reputed scholars saying otherwise. I guess you're smarter than them.
