Non-response to the issues raised, again. As you've raised no substantive issues, I'll leave your assertion to any readers. You are simply distracting from the o.p. When you want to talk about that, I may respond more, till then, hasta luego. Semi-interesting use of "untinged" but not hel...

Re: How does John the Baptist and baptism fit into the Christian theology of salvation?

I agree, spin, that Christian baptism is an initiation ritual. As I already said above: "...there is some variety in baptism initiation within Christianity...." And, yes, Judaism has other means of initiation ritual. Two agreements. A third agreement: that the Qumran-view Teacher of Right...

Josephus and Holy Men

Here are five passages concerning people found in the works of Josephus, Honi the Circle-Drawer, Judas the Essene, Menahem the Essene, Jesus and John the Baptist, all people somehow revered. I'm sure there are other passages that might also be relevant concerning such figures of marvel or astonishme...

Re: Does Suetonius refer to someone generally known as Chrestus?

This Chrestus - a name apparently often given to slaves - pushed the Jews to cause trouble, ie he was someone present in Rome to push them.

Re: How does John the Baptist and baptism fit into the Christian theology of salvation?

spin, above, in part: "Why does Christianity need John and baptism, but the baptist movement didn't need Jesus?" Need seems a curious word here, and that question may be a theological one as much as a historical one. (Judaism didn't "need" Jesus either?) [Hindu religions didn't ...

Re: If in Antiquities, why not in War, also?

Let's look back at StephenGoranson's gish gallop: spin does not like the thread title question. Fine. Maybe it is bad (or maybe not). Let's move on to more important matters that arose in this thread. Yes, let's drop the nonsensical o.p. Also, I am aware that Feldman changed his mind. I'm pleased ab...

How does John the Baptist and baptism fit into the Christian theology of salvation?

The story of John the Baptist as told by Josephus (18.116-119 - 18.5.2) involves a figure who gained much attention through his preaching, thus causing Herod Antipas to worry about the possibility of sedition. John was taken off into what is now Jordan to a stronghold called Machaerus and put to dea...
