Re: Ethnarch of King Aretas? the legendary Damascus basket c
2 Cor 31:33 an interpolation (likely an attempt to harmonize Paul's letter with Acts) If that would be the case, why did the interpolator substitute Jews for ethnarch of Aretas? Jews, being after Paul, makes sense. Why change that to ethnarch of Aretas the king? Why change from killing Paul to seiz...

They are not, in themselves, matters of history.Leucius Charinus wrote:Isn't it lucky we have spin here to correct Michael Grant on matters of history.spin wrote:... it is worth noting Grant himself mixes the notions of myth and docetism.

Re: Ethnarch of King Aretas? the legendary Damascus basket c
This makes a case for the separatist nature of the Jews in the lands of Egypt and Cyrene and it is on account of this that the Jews were given a "governor" (ethnarch, according to Josephus). There is no reason to think that such a position, if it were indeed called an "ethnarch"...

Here is a description of the function of the Jewish ethnarch in Alexandria, from Strabo being quoted by Josephus: http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/hopper/text?doc=J.%20AJ%2014.7.2&lang=original Was that ethnarch nominated by the Jewish king of the time (Herod the Great & Agrippa I), if any? Why...

Re: The Propaganda War Against Mythicism [Vridar]
One needs to stop dithering in semantics and deal with the Michael Grant quote, which basically presents the case in question. No dithering here, mountainman. I'm trying to get you to cut back on the confusion. When you misapply terms you not only confuse your reader, but you confuse yourself. Your...

Ethnarch of King Aretas? the legendary Damascus basket case
According to Josephus (Ant., XIX, V, 2-3), the Jews of Alexandria (Egypt) were represented by an ethnarch under Augustus. Bernard, ich verstehe Sie nicht. Sind Sie ein Atheist oder Sie sind sehr kirchlich? Naughty, Genghiz, naughty, very naughty. And not sehr wohlwollend. I can't fathom why you per...

Michael Grant 2004, :goodmorning: When you cite sources one usually includes the name of the work so one knows what the fuck you are citing from. Grant died in 2004 at the age of 89. Are you citing from his 1977 book on Jesus ("Jesus: An Historian's Review of the Gospels") in some more re...

Re: Philip?
Damascus was part of the territory of Philip, Do you have evidence for that? Cordially, Bernard Is this the same Philip that this source states died in 34 A.D? With incredible timing, Philip the Tetrarch died in the winter of 33/34 AD, mere months after Jesus had died (and risen) and not long since...

Re: Ethnarch of King Aretas? the legendary Damascus basket c
to spin, You don't need to mention it after having chosen your conjecture of a representative of Aretas IV who was not in control of Damascus laying in wait for Paul at a few gates Who said the ethnarch personally would have to lay in waiting at the city gates of Damascus? "Personally" is...
