Re: FF Bruce: Jesus Cursing Fig Tree as Historical Event

Plus the tree only symbolizes the Temple, not "the Jews." I thought the image came from Hosea's description of the destruction of Ephraim? Including the temple of Shiloh of course, but the fig tree part was more about the people and the land. Mark wraps the fig tree story around the Templ...

Re: Detering Thinks "City of God" a Medieval Forgery

Forgery is an ugly word. It would be more polite to call it "Deutero-Augustinian."

Re: FF Bruce: Jesus Cursing Fig Tree as Historical Event

Doesn't explain why he cursed it, and it works just fine as a literary parable. No need to historicize it.

Re: Polemic re Carrier Craig etc

Gary Habermas has worked with a clinical psychologist for over 20 years trying to understand why skeptics (atheist/agnostics) doubt the empty tomb theory. Habermas knows damn well why informed people don't buy the empty tomb - it's because there's no evidence for it and because it's historically ex...

Re: Ehrman's "How Jesus Became a God" is now out.

I listen to a lot of Great Courses. I'm listening to a really good one now from Robert Garland, called The Other Side of History: Daily Life in the Ancient World. Schiffman's series on the DSS isn't bad either (but kind of short).

Sorry, maybe I'm being dense but I don't understand what you mean by this.
Responding to the person rather than the argument.

Probably conflated Josephus with the servant light thing in the Talmud.

Re: Josephus question

Total fabrication. You can see an inventory of all Josephus' reference to the Golden Candlestick here. I also did several kindle word searches on the complete works of Josephus and found nothing close. Josephus just says the Herodian Menorah was carried away by Titus.
