I know. That's my point. The name has an etymology. It's not just a name, it's also a regular word.nili wrote:Yes, that is the etymology of David.Diogenes the Cynic wrote:It means "Beloved," which is attested at least once in the Tanakh that I know of as an honorific for God (Isaiah 5:1)

The lack of a dot could also be because there was no space. I think it's just inconclusive. I don't say it can't be a reference to a Davidic dynasty, but it's not a sure thing.
For all we know, the Davidic legend could have grown from the place name in a manner analogous to Romulus and Rome.

Re: 50 people in the Hebrew Bible also in archaeology
Thompson is certainly worth consideration. He is, however, an entrenched minimalist who finds much to be 'questionable.' Would you say that his view on the matter is widely held? It is shared by Israel Finkelstein, for one. I think the majority still holds with "House of David," though, b...

Re: 50 people in the Hebrew Bible also in archaeology
Nothing on that list is surprising or controversial except David, which is a little strained. I understand your comment regarding Solomon, but why do you consider the Tel Dan reference strained? It's a questionable identificaton . The way BYTDWD is written - as one word rather than two - normally i...

Re: Carrier and Crook debate
Before I watch, can someone give me a heads up on Cook? Is he an evangelical? a liberal Christian? an agnostic? something else? I'll watch it if it's one of the latter. If he's just another fundy Christian, I'll pass. He's an atheist and actually quite reasonable and is more respectful to mythicism...

Re: 50 people in the Hebrew Bible also in archaeology
Nothing on that list is surprising or controversial except David, which is a little strained. Notice that Solomon is not on the list. He should have made one of the biggest marks, yet his kingdom appears to be non-existent in the archaeology. So does his name. We can't even confirm that there was re...

Who withheld that ability that you would normally have? That's not an ability I would normally have, The ability does not exist for anybody at any time. Your request was logically impossible anyway. Please show where the logic breaks down. In detail. You made a request for me to relinquish somethin...

Re: Luke's sources
Some of MF's claims are too silly even for Holding/Turkel. It's funny, as a mod at the old BCH, I used to get PM's from people saying they suspected that this or that Christian apologist was really JPH, but I was never convinced that any of them were. I think some people regurgitate stuff they find ...
