Re: Those $600 Brill titles
...For example, I was lost in a rabbit hole of inscriptions and markings found on holy site at the summit of Mt. Hermon. I got stuck when I found a reference a book written in French and only available in print a major university libraries. I'll hunt it down someday, and I doubt it will be revelato...

Daniel Völter: any 'recent' critical assessments?
Daniel Voelter {= Daniël Erhard Johannes Völter} (1855-1942) born in Esslingen, Germany and died in Stuttgart, Germany (one imagines, of natural causes.) Lic. Dr. Voelter was a Professor of Theology at Amsterdam, so he is often called a "Dutch Professor". He was educated in Germany (Freibu...

yegads: Holy Moses, Thoth!
Search of the Forums shows this hasn't been discussed, ever? That Moses=Thoth theory. I have no knowledge of the state of Moses scholarship, but recent articles in the Israeli media suggest the myth of the my childhood has taken a beating. That dirty Egyptian, lol. I for one always loved the Moses s...

Agreed, the sense of the verb I'm reading is impelling, urging or pursuing (positively) - like a dog drives sheep.

Re: Dating Coptic
my standpoint - as inconvenient as it is, ...Coptic being written in 1st or 2nd CE is one of those things that isn't widely supported. Isn't there a consensus that Poimandres supposedly comes from the Coptic language? B. Copenhaver agrees with P. Kingsley that F.L. Griffith initially proposed the C...

Algis Uždavinys, PHILOSOPHY AS A RITE OF REBIRTH (Excerpt)
Has anyone read Philosophy as a Rite of Rebirth: From Ancient Egypt to Neoplatonism [2008]? I'm 40pp in and astounded ... its like a parallel history to what I was raised with, regarding philosophy's origins. Is it an alternative textbook? The Matheson Trust offers a teaser book excerpt of 165pp. Go...

Re: The Rechabites/Therapeutae.
Forgive me if this is inappropriate (?), I'm lifting a Reply from 20-year old thread on a different listserv; it contains some very intriguing points (not that I agree with all his assumptions or conclusions!). The subject is a possible connection between the Rechabites and Therapeutae . fwiw, the t...

Re: Genesis 28:12-19 (scholarship, dating?)
The Ladder (stair) Myth smells Egyptian to me. When was this bit written, in all probability?
Edit: dated optimistically to 1900 BC (following W.F. Albright) or much more likely to c.600 BC.

Re: Distinction between Ruler and Lord?
mlinssen - Thank you, for all this! Insofar as 'varying degrees' of authority are indicated, a 'nesting' (like Russian matryoshka dolls) theme might be exposed. I think there's ranking in some of these lists. And of course I don't presume they (Philo, Church Fathers, etc.) all used the same system. ...
