Re: Hypothesis: Wicked Priest = Herod Agrippa I, Teacher of Righteousness = Simeon of Jerusalem, Man of the Lie = Paul

But if CD is earlier than 4QpNah, then we'd have to suppose (as I gather you do) that there was more than one Teacher of Righteousness, and I would need to see persuasive reasons for thinking that. "Smooth things" is also used against opponents in the Hodayot, and Wise has ...

Re: Hypothesis: Wicked Priest = Herod Agrippa I, Teacher of Righteousness = Simeon of Jerusalem, Man of the Lie = Paul

I think the author of CD cites Is. 30:10, regardless of the original context, simply because it refers to "smooth things" (halaqot), as a way to play on the halakhot of the Pharisees. It just seems too coincidental to not refer to Pharisees, all the more so given that "seekers of smo...

Re: Hypothesis: Wicked Priest = Herod Agrippa I, Teacher of Righteousness = Simeon of Jerusalem, Man of the Lie = Paul

Here's another example of how the oral Torah was a "fence" in the sense that Jesus complains about in Mark 7. Though the actions of the Rabbis are not sanctioned by the Torah, they are done to protect the Torah. This is the common understanding of how the Oral Law serves as a fence around ...

Re: Hypothesis: Wicked Priest = Herod Agrippa I, Teacher of Righteousness = Simeon of Jerusalem, Man of the Lie = Paul

Just some things that came to mind after my initial reading of your great post. Thank you for your comments, I appreciate it. And "smooth things" is used in CD 1.18-2.1, along with other behavior of the sort that we see the Pharisees do in the NT. The part in CD 1.18-2.1 is inspired by Is...

Re: Hypothesis: Wicked Priest = Herod Agrippa I, Teacher of Righteousness = Simeon of Jerusalem, Man of the Lie = Paul

Rather than break up your well-written post, I thought I'd just mention some things that came to mind as I read it. As far as "builders of the wall" goes, I don't think it needs to exactly match the way that "fence" is used by the Pharisees or how the "wall" is used in ...

Re: Hypothesis: Wicked Priest = Herod Agrippa I, Teacher of Righteousness = Simeon of Jerusalem, Man of the Lie = Paul

As long as you see them as Pharisees I am happy. I don't see them as Pharisees so I hope there are other things that make you happy. :) But I want to discuss this hypothesis and I want to know what you think about my counter-arguments: 1) A fence is not a structural wall The Hebrew word for "f...

Re: Hypothesis: Wicked Priest = Herod Agrippa I, Teacher of Righteousness = Simeon of Jerusalem, Man of the Lie = Paul

I'm with those who think that the "builders of the wall" in CD are (or at least include to a significant extent) the Pharisees... Ok, I want to discuss this hypothesis but I want to be clear, I'm not willing to discuss the hypothesis that "builders of the wall" are Pharisees and...
