Re: Josephus' TF the source for Tacitus' reference to Jesus?
I am not committed to the forger being Eusebius (not as committed as Ken Olson is, at any rate), and it would not bother me to learn that it preceded Eusebius, but when Olson challenged me to post both that passage from Justin Martyr and the one from the Demonstration , neither of which explicitly ...

................................................... Time to bring in the reserves, Wieland Willker (fellow believer I think): http://www-user.uni-bremen.de/~wie/TCG/TC-Mark.pdf Irenaeus actually cites the longer form twice: Adv. haer. 3.10.5 (Latin) and 3.16.3 (Latin and Armenian). Irenaeus' exposi...

Re: Thou art Peter and upon this rock
[But mythology and theology in Judaism sometimes is not always a 100% literary creation, they often have historical cores. "Historical core" is a fuzzy term. Fiction very often, including ancient fiction, includes historical persons, real geographic places, all to create a sense of realis...

That is a very impressive summary, Joe. Well done. Might I add that in Against Heresies 3.11.8 Irenaeus quotes Mark 1.1 again (very top of the righthand column), but this time he leaves out the son of God . (This one is extant in the Greek.) When he quotes Mark 1.1 yet again in 3.16.3, son of God i...

Re: Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus.
I am also reminded of warnings against making too much of any passage in a text like this given that we have no way of being sure how much detail we have today was original to the gospel (did Matthew and Luke omit the names because they were not in their version of Mark?). I'd be interested to hear...

Re: A Plausible Reading of Mark, Well-Done with a Side of Ra
This seems to require one to read the father of alexander and rufus so that it refers symbolically to two concepts one of which is represented by the father of alexander the other represented by rufus i.e. taking it as equivalent to (the father of alexander) and rufus . This seems forced. Andrew Cri...

Re: Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus.
Random thought. What if Simon carrying the cross is not the focus of the narrative at all here? What if the focus is Jesus carrying his own cross only halfway, and Simon is there simply because the cross had to get to Golgotha somehow, and the soldiers certainly were not going to carry it? . . . T....

Hebrew_calendar Traditionally, for the Babylonian and Hebrew lunisolar calendars, the years 3, 6, 8, 11, 14, 17, and 19 are the long (13-month) years of the Metonic cycle. This cycle, which can be used to predict eclipses, forms the basis of the Greek and Hebrew calendars, and is used for the compu...

Re: Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus.
I do not see why the community would have to be small; surely there are people who live in one city, however small or large, whom people living in another city would not personally know, even if all involved are of the same religious sect. Why do you find it difficult to think of Mark as written fo...

Re: Original Form of the Ascension of Isaiah
This may be interesting. AoI 9:14 is typically rendered something like this And the god of that world will stretch forth his hand against the Son, and they will crucify Him on a tree, and will slay Him not knowing who He is. However the first part of the verse varies very widely Ethiopic reads And t...
