Re: Not that Lucian

Lucian is a common name. The 'Lucian' of Origen's c.248 AD work is not Lucian of Samosata (satirist, not Xtian) ... So who is this particular 'Lucian', and where was he active (coastal Syria? c.80 AD?) His followers have a dodgy Gospel, but that's O.'s opinion and not definite. Origen sounds abit u...

Re: Valentinianism, Basilideans, Simonians and Paul

The claim about Theudas It was later, in the times of Adrian the king, that those who invented the heresies arose; and they extended to the age of Antoninus the elder, as, for instance, Basilides, though he claims (as they boast) for his master, Glaucias, the interpreter of Peter. Likewise they alle...

Re: Did Cyrus write the 10 commandments?

Re: The Identity of Celsus and His "Jew"

The Lucian here is Lucian of Samosata. His Alexander is dedicated to a Celsus who may or may not be the Celsus to whom Origen replied,

Re: John Hyrcanus, not John the Baptist, in Luke 16:16

Could you give a source in Josephus for this please ? Andrew Criddle two facts: FACT 1: In his description of John Hyrcanus Josephus writes: “He was the only man to unite in his person three of the highest privileges: the supreme command of the nation, the high priesthood, and the gift of prophecy....

Re: John Hyrcanus, not John the Baptist, in Luke 16:16

“The Law and the Prophets were proclaimed until John . Since that time, the good news of the kingdom of God is being preached, and everyone is forcing their way into it. John Hyrcanus is meant here, proving that Doudna's view of a confusion between the Baptist and Hyrcanus is probably correct. If w...

Re: Were the Church Fathers 'Philosophers'?

Notice how they're all converts too, we don't here of any second generation christians (kids) until the 3rd century. In the Martyrdom Polycarp claims Eighty and six years have I served Him [Christ], and He never did me any injury: how then can I blaspheme my King and my Saviour? This seems to imply...
