Re: Surprising List of Scholars Who Date Pilate to 18 CE
And that is where this whole argument rests - Josephus and his two writing 'hats' - historian and prophetic historian. In your view in what sense is Josephus (a) a historian and (b) a prophetic historian? When what Josephus says can be backed up from other sources he is wearing his historian's hat....

Re: Surprising List of Scholars Who Date Pilate to 18 CE
What I have missed so far is the evidence that the evangelists did see significance in a specific number of years between Jesus' crucifixion and the destruction of the Temple.

Re: Mark, the Jews and the destruction of the temple
This reminds me of Hugh Schonfeld's "Passover Plot. Schonfeld argues that raising Lazarus from the dead was a dry run for Jesus' plot to fake his own death. He speculates that there was a drug used on Lazarus that Jesus also took when he was on the cross. This would have been the "vinegar...

Re: Possibly the Ultimate Proof for Mythicism
The usual sorts of tests applied to hypotheses. Example, predictions. If X then we would expect to find Y.Stephan Huller wrote:Tests? Like what?
e.g. if Mark wrote with a chronological scheme in mind we would expect to find some pointer or reference to it in his gospel.

Re: Dreams of Any Kind You Please
If the author was caught up in a series of persecutions and is executed along with the principal character, then the abrupt ending makes all the more sense and is more dramatic when the document is then discovered after the fact-as was the case with Acts of the Apostles. If, if, if . . . . all very...

Re: Does anyone have On the Historicity of Jesus yet?
Well, Neil, you indicated a way out for Carrier on this mess, but that's not what someone would understand when reading it (less than 4 times!) . So reading with comprehension and according to the fundamentals of basic logic means I'm "finding a way out"? If I read with hostile intent I d...

Re: Carrier's big gaffe in OHJ
First a reminder: 1 Corinthians 2:8 "None of the rulers [ 'archons' ] of this age understood this; for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory." In his book, "On The Historicity Of Jesus" (OHJ) p. 190, Carrier made this startling remark , which would kill hi...
