Re: IS THE PROTO-LUKE HYPOTHESIS SOUND?
And in a matter of moments I found a Latinism in Irenaeus: And since the twelfth Aeon, when it rebelled, deserted the eleven (letters) before it, they say that the form of the (two) letters (found in the letter mu) is parallel to the shape of the lamda—for lambda, that is the number thirty, is the e...

Re: IS THE PROTO-LUKE HYPOTHESIS SOUND?
The term 'Gnostic' (Γνωστικοὺς) seems to be the name given to the heresies by Irenaeus. Odd name.

Re: IS THE PROTO-LUKE HYPOTHESIS SOUND?
There is so little Greek available for Irenaeus that it is hard to determine the extent of his Latinisms but Epiphanius does preserve the Greek here. But the names are Latinized Σιμωνιανοὶ Μενανδριανοὶ Σατορνιλιανοὶ Βασιλειδιανοὶ. Surely Irenaeus the originator of 'heresiology' was responsible for t...

Re: IS THE PROTO-LUKE HYPOTHESIS SOUND?
Consider Irenaeus's early use of the term 'Christian' in Adv Marc 1.25.6 "They declare that they are no longer Jews, and that they are not yet Christians." Who was responsible for this term?

Re: IS THE PROTO-LUKE HYPOTHESIS SOUND?
The reference at the beginning of Adv Haer about Irenaeus's own barbarous Greek (if he wrote Adv Haer in Greek): Thou wilt not expect from me, who am resident among the Keltae (or alternatively 'brothers'), and am accustomed for the most part to use a barbarous dialect, any display of rhetoric, whic...

Re: IS THE PROTO-LUKE HYPOTHESIS SOUND?
I suggest you do a study of the history of linguistics and cut the crap. The idea that Irenaeus was connected with the Latinisms isn't pure speculation as you suggest. There is also the possibility that Irenaeus was responsible for a bilingual edition of Adv Haer (because the Old Latin edition was ...

Re: IS THE PROTO-LUKE HYPOTHESIS SOUND?
Nor those Latinisms. In your conspiracy theory, weren't they written from the perspective of Rome?? Irenaeus was using Clement's source to reconstruct his pro-Roman agenda. He clearly used Papias to reconstruct the Matthew argument. The idea that Irenaeus was using sources to reconstruct Adv Haer 2...

No that's not what I mean. I stop short of publicly analyzing a friend's personality. There's only so far you can go off the perch.
