Does he question why the church didn't seem fit to preserve Papias Expositions of the Oracles of the Lord or does he just chalk it up to a historical accident? IIRC it survived the middle ages. I should add here that Bird argues for the use of notebooks in the early church. He notes the reference to parchments in 2 Tim 4:13. And it is also clear that notebooks were used by students of rabbis as well as standard in ancient instruction. I wonder if he's arguing that Jesus' disciples followe...

A sayings gospel by Matthew then? Regarding Mark, yeah the order thing but in the part I quoted, it seems Papias is really stressing that Mark didn't have any falsehoods in his gospel.

I just started reading (literally I'm on pg 14) MacDonald's Two Shipwrecked Gospels and he's discussing Papias' remarks on Mark and Matthew. He says that there's at least three versions of Matthew that Papias is discussing, the original in Hebrew/Aramaic in the correct order, and at least two Greek ...

So there should be evidence of someone, anyone, denouncing the man, had he not existed. And this is the critical time period when people could recall living memory to refute it.
