Re: Original Form of the Ascension of Isaiah

At the same time, even so, it would still indicate in favor of the ancient period for the composition of this passage in the Ascension of Isaiah. I think this has already been mentioned in this thread but just to clarify. We have a solid terminus ante quem for the long version of chapter 11 of befo...

Re: A lengthy note on Hebrews 7.14 (sprung from Judah).

Hi, Andrew. Do you find an indication in the passage itself that the author is relying on genealogical information rather than inferences from scripture? To me it appears that the logic of the verse may well run from scripture to fact (we know he was a Judahite because we know he is the Christ, and...

Re: A lengthy note on Hebrews 7.14 (sprung from Judah).

Assuming a historical Jesus, wouldn't his tribal status (as a Judahite) be one of the most well known things about him ? Much more well known than his possible descent from David. In the same sense that Paul's status as a Benjaminite is important to his Jewish identity, so would Jesus' status as par...

FWIW Origen Homiles on Jeremiah 11 has an interesting passage on Linen from the earth.

Re: Say It Aint So Joe. Test. Flav. Eusebius Author/Discover

I'm not sure how editorial comment here is being defined for example He [Jesus] drew over to him both many of the Jews and many of the Gentiles. seems straightforward narrative. while Some of them also used reproaches, and abused the man, as crowds of such people usually do . seems partly editorial ...

Re: Some medieval "history", by L. Sprague de Camp

The Dietrich Legend takes shape hundreds of years after the death of the historical Theoderic. premodern accounts of long-ago events (events occurring long before the account was written down) do mix up history with fiction/myth/legend. (FWIW the earliest sources for the Legends of Theoderic such as...

Re: Irenaeus of Lyons (yes, "Lyons"). TransMission E-Mission

The Armenian for book 3 is very fragmentary. My guess is that it is extant for 3.16.3 and not for 3.10.5 Andrew Criddle I've checked this. The Armenian is not extant for 3.10 but it doesn't seem to be extant for the relevant part of 3.16. There is an Armenian fragment for 3.16 which reads but we kn...

Re: A brief note about Hebrews 13.11-13

After discovering some more discussions online which seem to assume that the mention of the gate in Hebrews 13.12 stands out as odd or different somehow from the Israelite encampment and sacrificial protocols of the surrounding verses (some such assumptions even being made by mythicists keen to rem...

Re: A brief note on Hebrews 12.2-3 (contradiction by sinners

Can you show contradiction/opposition in this sense to someone without believing/acknowledging their existence ?

If not, the passage implies that there were sinful people who disagreed with Christ but recognised him as a real being.
