Re: “Abba, Father” as two distinct deities, not one

Another defect of the Messianic hypothesis: it assumes as a natural thing a comparison between the insurrectionist ideology and the Christian Messianic ideology. As if Mark had the 'moral duty', as writer, of placing the Christians or the Jesus story in relation to the fall of Jerusalem and his hist...

Re: “Abba, Father” as two distinct deities, not one

You are still not explaining why Mark associates Barabbas with insurrectionists rather than with brigands/robbers. Every word you write, whether about John or about Celsus or about Marcion, depends upon the association with brigandage/robbery. But Mark (twice) specifies insurrection. This is a deta...

Re: “Abba, Father” as two distinct deities, not one

Ben If you want to build a case on Barabbas being a "murderer," have at it. That may work. But you built your case on Barabbas being a "brigand," which fails to explain why Mark twice associates him with insurrection instead of with brigandage. Because the not-Christians were acc...

Re: “Abba, Father” as two distinct deities, not one

In answer to Ben : But you are obviously, intractably incorrect about it being a distinction without a difference. Insurrectionists are not the same as brigands. Birds can fly. So can butterflies. But birds and butterflies are not the same thing. In the eyes of the Roman rule, a insurrectionist and ...

Re: “Abba, Father” as two distinct deities, not one

In answer to Ulan : The main protagonist here is Jesus Christ, and the scene wants to make clear that you don't miss who is to blame for the death of the protagonist: not Pilate, but the sanhedrin Also in the his article, Couchoud admits that the episode works also as pro-Roman apology. But he recog...

Re: “Abba, Father” as two distinct deities, not one

By the your Zealot hypothesis, Ulan, you may explain the favor of the people towards the Zealot Barabbas, but not the choice of Pilate of making the freedom of the one the death of the other. Attempts at psychological reasoning like this assume that we are looking at a real scene here. We aren't. H...

Re: “Abba, Father” as two distinct deities, not one

@Ben John 10:8-10 8 All who have come before me are thieves and robbers , but the sheep have not listened to them. 9 I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they ma...

Re: “Abba, Father” as two distinct deities, not one

But what does it take to disprove the theory? I am just curious. If I say 'I expect to uncover a buried treasure in my backyard.' And then I dig up my backyard and there is no treasure. At what point do I have admit I was wrong there is no buried treasure in my backyard? What does it take? You cont...

Re: “Abba, Father” as two distinct deities, not one

If we leave this Barabbas/Barrabas controversy alone for a moment (I can see points for both explanations), how does the specific mention of the insurrection in gMark figure into this hypothesis? About the specificity of the insurrection, I have talked here as of a trace of a previous proto-Marcion...

Re: “Abba, Father” as two distinct deities, not one

Secret Alias wrote: Thu Aug 09, 2018 3:04 pm So you thought that the Marcionite name of the thief was BARABBAS.
no. Bar-Rabbas is the marcionite name of the robber. While Bar-Abbas is the name of the robber for the judaizers.

Bar-Abbas is more old than Bar-Rabbas.
Is it more clear now?
