I think archaeological matters are related, but obviously 'non-textual' ...

Re: On the "Bad Character" Lineage
What you need to convict someone is (1) evidence of a crime, (2) an "enraged" jury and then (3) demonstrations of the "bad character" of the accused. You don't know what you're talking about, again. I sat on a murder trial as a juror; I took an active role in the discussions of ...

Here's a "Story Conference Transcript" supposedly dated to 1978 : Philip Kaufman — "... kind of a Middle Eastern adventure based around a similar idea to something like that book "The Spear of Destiny" where the Nazis were into mystical cults and so forth, and they were loo...

Indeed. Forgers were certainly active in Palestine in the early- mid-20th C.; the scope of their trade is not generally known to lay-people, but it was extensive for the niche market.
Here's a 1984 article on mid-20th C. forgery that's useful background.

Re: What You See/What You Don't See
Smith's homosexuality led him to him to misread the letter. This should be taken seriously as a possibility. You assume something innate, here. By analogy: Would you say someone 'being a woman' would lead them to misread something? A 'feminist perspective' might be identified in a female (or male) ...

Re: Sabar's New Morton Smith Article
Drivel.
I don't fault M.Smith for being a closeted homosexual. I fault M.Smith for being a psychopathic fraud. His belabored, grandiose ploy might yet baffle simple minds, but it doesn't baffle me.
