Re: The self-evident emergence of Christianity
This is intended to be my last paper on it all: 3 years, over 2,000 pages written in 32 papers - and the puzzle is solved https://www.academia.edu/76105160/The_self_evident_emergence_of_Christianity Abstract: This article proposes a business case for the emergence of Christianity, and one that has ...

Re: At What Point Does 'Based on a Historical Character' Become Unhistorical?
Even the deeply mythologized Buddha has a consistent core character. fwiw, that doesn't make Buddha historical, of course. It only makes him a less imaginative creation. ;-) Certainly! After my research I think there's a 10-15% chance that the Buddha was historical, and it's fairly simple to recons...

Re: At What Point Does 'Based on a Historical Character' Become Unhistorical?
With respect to the OP Jesus or whatever he was originally called might have been based on a historical character. Not sure how real this makes him. If an author bases a character on a historical figure for a work of fiction then the author's character is a work of fiction and of no value to a hist...

Re: At What Point Does 'Based on a Historical Character' Become Unhistorical?
I don't see what is problematic about this. 1. humans lie about some things but not all things 2. politicians lie about a lot of things 3. Church Fathers are like politicians Politicians and the Church Fathers also notably promote and defend their own ideological narrative. Just look at how many Ca...

Re: All in the Greek NT: Mary + mother + Magdalene
What do you reckon is the origin(al meaning) of the Mary/mother/Magdalene figure? (perhaps this is in your Thomas Commentary).

Alternative ending(s) to the Christ narrative(s) / Gospels
I think it may be useful to collect all the possible alternative endings to the Christ narratives here (different from the typical canonical ones). I'm keenly interested in the possibility that the older/original Christ narratives did not contain any Passion/crucifixion/resurrection, but instead had...

Re: The best case for a historical Jesus in my humble opinion...
In earliest writings (without interpolations), the crucifixion appears to be relative to only the corpse of Jesus. Are you including only the writings that feature the crucifixion? Because I thought you theorized (or maybe only played with the idea) that the original ending of the Gospel narrative ...

Extremely exciting! I'll have a few days free so I'll spend that time running through the Commentary. Thank you for your work, Martijn. Always illuminating.

Re: Did common early Christians know much of the gospel narratives?
If we are limiting ourselves to the plebeian class before, say, 150, I think the sorts of stories they knew about and discussed were such as: Jesus descending through the heavens to magically put himself in Mary's womb where he gestated for 7 months before magically appearing outside of her, withou...
