Re: Eisenman and the DSS
re carbon-dating - It is possible document materials were written on or re-used long after the material was made ie. the writings are not as old as the material As far as I know there is no direct literary evidence for stockpiling of raw writing surface materials, but it is in theory possible. Many...

Re: Siege of Bethsura
Remember that any particular Year of the Greeks (Seleucid era) may be stated according to a local calendar with a Fall or a Spring epoch (depending on specific region). This means that the Greek year will span parts of two years stated according to our Julian reckoning (January 1st epoch), which has...

Re: Jason BeDuhn's reconstruction/translation of Marcion...
Well, Jason BeDuhn's book has arrived. I like the guy's style. Very cautiously describes what he thinks can and cannot be reconstructed from the sources. Like a lot of Polebridge books, the translation he offers has lots of concessions to Jesus Seminar type conventions, but not excessively so, and n...

Re: Methodology for Ancient Historical Sources
Very interesting, thanks. I haven't read White. I don't think I can engage his thought right now, to the extent that I can guess about it from what you offer above. All I can do is throw out the question, what are the practical implications for today's historian if s/he works from an assumption tha...

Re: Eisenman and the DSS
MH, I did not realize that Eisenman was still so upset with the whole C-14 dating issue. I've corresponded with him in the past and he has strong opinions, to be sure. Definitely does not like Hershel Shanks of BAR, who he thinks is not an honest fellow (i.e., anything for a buck), which I can agree...

Re: Methodology for Ancient Historical Sources
I guess I was venting. I am influenced by Hayden V. White. While I have read pretty much all of his books, I am going to let a website (e Notes) speak for me, because it is getting late: White is known for his analysis of the literary structures of the works of nineteenth- and twentieth-century hist...

Re: The Real Bottom Line in the Mythicism Debate
There needs to be a referee or referees in this game, arbiters who have no cock in the cockfight. It isn't enough to criticize 'religious agendas' where - at least according to my reckoning - atheists seem to be falling into the pattern. We should all just want to find the truth. The cart can't be ...

Re: The Real Bottom Line in the Mythicism Debate
The following was summarized in 2009, I think as a post to IIDB or possibly another list, from A. Powell Davies, The Meaning of the Dead Sea Scrolls , written in the year of my humble birth: I guess the reaction to the DSS started with a debate about the relative date of the scrolls, with Drs Willia...
