Re: Kartagraphy Markoff. Did "Mark" Get Any Geography Right?

Consider Bauckham: Richard Bauckham has noted that the geography in Mark is accurate when looked at from the perspective of fisherman from Capernaum, which is consistent with Mark relaying the gospel from Peter, who indeed was a fisherman. Many scholars use modern maps to gauge Mark, which often res...

Re: The Single Strangest Thing About the Gospel

But strangely the gospel has Jesus avoid declaring anything when he first appears before men in what is now the synagogue of Capernaum. How can Jesus come down from heaven or Christ come down from heaven and then in the mise en scene of a Jewish religious gathering (whether at a synagogue in Galile...

Re: When People Imagine Jesus Had Existence Do They Really Think He Would Have Relevance Today?

Indeed it seems quite arbitrary where one draws the line between 'original' parts to the message and 'things that were added later.' Well, for Paul and for most of Christianity, pull the Resurrection out and you might as well just go play checkers...."if Christ has not been raised, then our pr...

Re: When People Imagine Jesus Had Existence Do They Really Think He Would Have Relevance Today?

But it made me think. Those who argue for Jesus's historical 'existence' surely can't believe in a Jesus that had any real power or insight, profundity and the like at least with respect to 'how to live in the modern world' which is how he and the religion of him is usually positioned in this count...

Re: Is there an evidence-based argument for oral tradition behind the gospels?

Was the apostolic college established more or less in-line with the gospel account, or as a fabricated history to support the apostolic succession of later church hierarchs? A fair question, probably well treated by many scholars. Testimony to the apostles as is found in Paul and Ignatius of Antioc...

Re: Is there an evidence-based argument for oral tradition behind the gospels?

Do you think you're going to get a reasonable answer from a guy who think the shroud of Turin is 'evidence' for Jesus or that Jesus had 'spiritual chromosomes' from the Holy Spirit? Argument by misrepresentation and insult is pretty poor argumentation. In trying to disqualify my contributions you h...

Re: Is there an evidence-based argument for oral tradition behind the gospels?

I don't know anybody who disputes that an adequate technology was available, which was practiced for some things. The question is whether or not the technology was applied in Jesus' case. Most would agree that some kind of apostolic college was established. Mark 3:13-15: He went up the mountain and...

Re: Is there an evidence-based argument for oral tradition behind the gospels?

But if you think that the death and resurrection of Jesus is the core of the gospel narrative then we have to explain why the evangelists bothered with all the other chapters before their concluding two or three; and you have to ask why the tradition was so varied if it was, as Paul seems to imply,...

Re: Is there an evidence-based argument for oral tradition behind the gospels?

I think it is reasonable on ordinary prioristic grounds to withhold confidence from an organized oral transmission channel with formal quality-control features. On the other hand, see Chapter 3 of Michael Bird's The Gospel of the Lord for the idea of the exact transmission of teaching in the rabbin...
